Applications are invited for whole-time or part-time Locum Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia to join our team of 15 Intensive Care Consultants at the Leicester Royal Infirmary
We are seeking a highly trained individual committed to Intensive Care Medicine. The successful applicant will support and contribute to the continued development of critical care services in UHL They will be required to undertake management duties, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and clinical audit.
The work pattern offered is designed to give the appointee the best opportunity to develop their clinical and non-clinical interests whilst most effectively supporting the department. Previous holders of this post have progressed to substantive positions,
Main duties of the job
Key Tasks
- To provide Consultant Intensivist cover for the Intensive Care Unit at the LRI. This currently comprises 25 level 3 beds used flexibly in a physical space for 28 beds.
- To participate in an ICU On-Call Rota dependent upon site.
- Support the ICU service following the expansion into a temporary satellite unit and with a planned move into a new build ICU.
- Deliver a high quality ICU & Anaesthetic service, supporting the department with a positive attitude towards flexible working.
- Supervise and train junior intensive care medical staff from a range of specialties rotating through the ICU.
- Work with the acute pain team to provide safe and effective postoperative analgesia to patients.
- Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences.
- Teaching Post-graduate and under-graduate, research and administration.
- Develop the Critical Care Service along with the other Consultants at UHL.
- Work with the Clinical Governance team to enhance patient safety.
- To work flexibly to help cover the workload of the CMG.
About us
The Adult Intensive Care Unit of Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI) is funded for 25 level 3 beds used flexibly in a physical space of 28 beds. The unit admits over 1200 patients per year of which up to 80% are emergency or non-elective admissions. Daytime and out-of-hours cover is provided by dedicated Intensive Care Consultants. The ICU is recognised for stage 1, stage 2 and stage 3 (Basic, Intermediate and Advanced) training as specified by the FICM. There is an Intensive Care Outreach service 24/7 (the Deteriorating Adult Response Team), providing specialist nursing support to the wards. This is a new post in Intensive Care Medicine within ITAPS at the LRI hospital site. It is expected that the post holder will take part in the day-time cover and on-call rota.
The Government has awarded Leicester's Hospitals £450m of capital investment over the next 5 years to complete our investment and reconfiguration plans. The £450m programme includes two 'super' intensive care units with 100 beds in total, almost double the current number with modernised of wards, operating theatres and imaging facilities.

- Responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department.
- Responsibility for the provision of a safe and efficient anaesthetic service for elective and emergency care at UHL including preoperative assessment and postoperative care.
- To participate in service development and business planning in collaboration with the other Consultants in the department, the CMG and local GPs and commissioners within the local CCGs.
- Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff including the observance of local employment and human resource policies and procedures;
- Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally.
- In line with GMC Good Medical Practice it is the responsibility of the post-holder to ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiatives within the area of work.
- The post-holder is expected to respond in a timely fashion to legitimate requests from Trust officers this might include investigations of incidents or complaints.
- The post-holder is expected to participate in teaching and training of junior staff and other clinical staff groups. The appointee will also have supervision responsibilities for junior medical staff within the specialty. If appropriate the post-holder will be named in the contract of junior staff as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as an initial source of advice to such doctors regarding their careers.

- Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences.
