Locum Consultant in Internal General Medicine

This is an exciting opportunity to join our welcoming and friendly team within the department of Internal Medicine. As part of our strategy to improve medical inpatient care, we have formed the department of General Medicine. The Internal Medicine wards are based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary and the Leicester General Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicants will work with colleagues on the Internal Medicine inpatient base wards. Appointees will play a key role in helping to deliver Internal Medical education at postgraduate level, to help train future consultants in Internal Medicine and develop urgent outpatient care for Internal Medicine patients. The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust consists of three acute teaching hospitals serving the population of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR). It is fully committed to Continuing Medical Education for consultants.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To provide senior clinical decision making on a Internal Medical Ward designed for patients not appropriate for immediate discharge or transfer. This will include consultant ward rounds & board rounds.
  • To partake in the out of hours Medical Consultant Rota for either the Acute Medical Unit (Leicester Royal Infirmary) or Clinical Decisions Unit (Glenfield General Hospital).
  • To lead on the implementation of Red to Green processes on the ward along with other systems to ensure appropriate and safe clinical care on the ward.
  • To supervise and train junior medical staff. This will include supporting a new CESR programme to support development of future General Medical consultants.
  • To ensure the provision of good standards of practice and care as described in the GMC Guidance Duties of a Doctor are followed at all times; and that bad practice is reported.
  • To ensure that clinical practice is both effective and efficient and that appropriate monitoring of clinical care takes place. To actively participate in audit.
  • To work with the CMG management team to ensure that services are delivered efficiently and reflect best practice with processes and governance to match - this may require new and flexible ways of working in the future
  • To provide continuing responsibility for the care of the patients in their charge and for the proper organisation and functioning of their clinical practice.
  • To work closely with other specialties, departments and outside agencies to deliver the objectives of the Clinical Management Group.
  • To take responsibility for ensuring that critical clinical incidents, as defined in the Trusts Critical Incident Policy, are reported in a timely manner.
  • To participate in yearly appraisal and job planning.
  • To undertake Mandatory & Statutory training as determined by the Trust and Clinical Management Group.
  • To undertake the delivery of undergraduate teaching as a clinical teacher.

  • Full GMC Registration
  • MB BS or Equivalent
  • Fully Accredited for Higher Specialist Training or will be eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months of the interview date for General Medicine
  • MRCP/MRCS or Equivalent

  • Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations
  • Higher degree e.g. MSc, MD or equivalent
