About us

Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:

  • high-quality care for all,
  • being a great place to work,
  • partnerships for impact, and
  • research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:

  • we are compassionate,
  • we are proud,
  • we are inclusive, and
  • we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Message from Jon Melbourne, Chief Operating Officer and Jonathan Cusack, Clinical Director Womens and Childrens

Thank you for your taking the time to consider this opportunity to work with us. We are firmly committed to being the best possible provider of healthcare and place to work in the NHS and we have an exciting opportunity to recruit a new Head of Operations for Womens and Childrens Clinical Management Group (W&C CMG).

UHL is a Trust with regional and national reach. It has an operating turnover in excess of £1.4 billion and it provides a wide range of general and specialist services across a diverse range of communities in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) and beyond. Whilst we are a large Trust, it is essential that we ensure all of our communities, patients and colleagues receive a personal and positive experience when they interact with the Trust reflected in our new vision leading in healthcare, trusted in communities.

W&C is one of the biggest and most complex CMGs in UHL, including one of the largest maternity and neonatal services in the UK and a childrens hospital with all key services located on one site. With a budget of £215m and over 2,100 colleagues, W&C has services which operate across Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General, Glenfield and community hospitals, as well as out in the wider community.

Now is an exciting time for W&C, with developments, service improvements and investments across the CMG. This includes the New Hospitals Programme which will mean a huge investment in UHL and patient care in Leicester. Our programme will deliver a new childrens hospital and a dedicated women and families hospital at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

We are looking for a Head of Operations who can show that they lead in the right way and that can evidence what they deliver. We will work together as a team across UHL to drive improvements in care and to create an environment in which individuals and teams can excel. We want to UHL to have one of the best cultures in the NHS because an inclusive and empowering culture delivers safe care.

The post-holder will play a key role in ensuring supportive and responsive operational leadership across W&C and UHL. We want a leader who will work alongside us to drive improvements to lead our services. The role will provide many opportunities to make a difference for our staff and patients, and will have our full support.

UHL is also part of the LLR Integrated Care System and we already have strong relationships with primary care, CCG, Leicestershire Partnership Trust, Local Authority and voluntary sector partners.

We are working to the following timeline:

  • Job goes live: 28th September
  • Job closes: 18th October
  • All candidates contacted to confirm if they have made the shortlist: by 20th October
  • Proposed Interview date: 3rd November 2023

If you would like to speak to us about the role, please do get in touch. Thank you.
