Job summary

To work in a supported learning environment to undertake a development programme leading to a National Standard as part of an apprenticeship programme. To develop the skills and knowledge required to complete the programme end point assessment to secure employment and progress in their career in the future.

You will be trained to develop skills, knowledge, and behaviours of special and therapeutic diets as well as religious, ethnic, and other dietary needs. You will also develop and gain a good knowledge of our production systems as well as health and safety within the workplace.

You will assist our chefs and kitchen assistants with food production for all areas including kitchens, wards, dining rooms and satellite venues. You will be required to adhere to departmental standards and food hygiene regulations. You will also always act in a manner that upholds the Trust's values, working as part of a team to ensure efficiency and excellent customer care.

This would ideally suit a candidate age from 16-18 looking to start their career within catering environment.

To qualify for the apprenticeship role the minimum criteria is:-

  • You must have GCSE in English and Maths
  • Have not completed an apprenticeship at the same level and sector in the past.
  • You do not have a Degree in a similar or same subject

Main duties of the job

To undertake a development programme leading to anApprenticeship Standard as part of an employedapprenticeship within the agreed timescales.

To actively participate in a development plan which will beregularly reviewed with the line manager and trainingprovider and progress to achieving the end pointassessment.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Develop effective communication skills to ensure an accurate exchange of information to the wider estates & facilities teams.

Develop a range of customer service skills to gain an understanding of individual needs and provide information relating to the catering service.

Undertake all work allocated by chefs under supervision.

To assist the catering team meet all required deadlines set by back of house team leaders or catering managers.

With support from the chefs ensure foods are wholesome and safe.

Full training on the preparation of raw meat, fish, and poultry, including weighing, traying up into containers and labelling correctly and paying attention to prevent any risk of cross contamination.

Support chefs with general preparation of all bakery items for both staff visitor and patient menus.

Cooking of food as per standard recipes up to the required departmental standards, following daily menus and production lists using a variety of traditional cooking methods, maintaining the National Good Food Standards.

Cooking of food for adhoc events under supervision.

Under supervision ensure sufficient food is prepared for each meal whilst ensuring minimal waste.

Full training on the preparation and production of salad items, sandwiches, and buffets as required for all service areas.

Training and qualifications to ensure hygiene regulations are adhered to whilst paying particular attention to temperatures of food during storage, preparation, cooking and service.

Always demonstrating diligence.

Learning and understanding how to comply with all organisational and departmental procedures and policies.

Health and safety

Support given to report any defective equipment or health and safety hazards.

Escalate to a manager if necessary.

Support the catering teams and contribute to the continued development of the Catering Department.

Maintain and develop own competence

Undertakes any training deemed necessary by the Trust or catering management team.
