Job summary
A development opportunity has arisen for the position of Corneal Specialist Nurse. We are seeking an experienced registered nurse with experience of working within Ophthalmology who has a desire to progress to a Clinical Specialist role.
We are looking for a motivated person, willing to develop themselves, becoming an autonomous practitioner with the Corneal team. You will have completed Post Graduate study and be willing to undertake the necessary skills and training to support the needs of our corneal patients and their families.
You will have the opportunity to develop your leadership and clinical skills which will contribute to the development of a nurse-led service.
You will be supported by our highly experienced and passionate Corneal Consultants in the care and management of this patient group.
You will have a flexible approach to meet needs of the service. Some off hospital site working will be considered as service capacity increases. You will be expected provide an efficient and effective service for a quality patient experience.
This is open to individuals as a band 5 development if no ophthalmology experience. A competency package must be completed within a time frame to achieve Band 6.
Main duties of the job
The Corneal Nurse Specialist will act as the clinical expert and professional resource to the multi professional team, patients and carers within the corneal service.
The post holder will receive training & mentorship from existing post holders with the ultimate aim of the development nurse role working independently as the corneal specialist nurse. Once trained the post will include the management of a caseload of patients, providing specialist advice within their clinical area. The post holder when fully trained will act as a clinical leader and role model for ongoing development of clinical practice, research and standards of care.
The corneal nurse specialist will be a core member of the department and will be responsible for ensuring a coordinated and comprehensive range of services are provided for all patients receiving active treatments for corneal disease that are referred to UHL.
