We have recently received funding to expand our Paediatric Epilepsy Specialist Nursing Service. We are looking for someone with the passion & skill to develop themselves & others within the team . This is an exciting opportunity for someone with existing experience & knowledge to expand & promote further the Epilepsy Specialist Nursing role.

Main duties of the job

  • To work with a range of stakeholders across Health, Social Care and third sector organisations to facilitate appropriate care for children with Epilepsy across the region.
  • Act as the clinical expert and professional resource to the patients and carers and multi-professional team across Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland, as well as our neighbouring counties.
  • Work alongside other members of the Epilepsy Multi- disciplinary Team, Lead Nurse and Head of Nursing to ensure the development and delivery of a high quality service.
  • Directly or indirectly influence all aspects of care and management of patients within the Epilepsy Service
  • Deliver high quality, clinically effective care and patient experience, utilising research and in collaboration with colleagues in everyday practice.
  • Act as a role model and clinical resource demonstrating high standards of care and providing clinical leadership in the specialist area.
  • Support the Regional Lead Nurse with development and delivery of a program of practice and professional development for staff within the specialty.
  • Take part in clinical research and service development activity within the Paediatric Epilepsy Service.

Job responsibilities

  • To cover a complex caseload, managing, co-ordinating & providing their care, through working across boundaries for CYP with epilepsy. This includes supporting continuity of care across secondary, tertiary, community and mental health services as applicable.
  • Manage a caseload of patients, as appropriate within the specialty, delivering individualised and personalised direct patient care.
  • To prioritise care that can be offered to families taking a flexible approach
  • To work co-operatively and flexibly with colleagues to ensure ongoing care for all CYP with epilepsy.
  • A visible, accessible and assertive clinical expert to who staff and users can turn to for assistance, expert advice and support.
  • Demonstrate appropriate expert practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. This will necessitate high levels of autonomy and advocacy.
  • To assist in leading and facilitating the management of children & young people with epilepsy with support from the wider multi-disciplinary team
  • Co-ordinate care through effective communication make every contact count
    • To include supporting the mental well-being of CYP with epilepsy.
    • Ensuring effective communication between quaternary, our tertiary, secondary, primary care services and the family.
    • Make appropriate referrals and delegate care to community paediatric nurses working closely to communicate changes.
    • Refer to other health care, social and education staff in primary, secondary and tertiary & quaternary setting, acting as an advocate for the family, liaising with and facilitating the use of available services.
  • Support, assist and encourage the multi-disciplinary team in resolving complex patient problems, by the provision of new and innovative approaches of care for CYP with epilepsy.
  • Ensuring, and establishing where required, relevant referral pathways into services such as CAMHS, Neuropsychology and neurodevelopmental services.
  • To review children and families regularly in both in-patient and out-patient settings.
    • To be available to support CYP with epilepsy consultant clinics throughout the week along with other ENSs
    • Attend & contribute to weekly ward grand round
    • To facilitate, assist, attend and support rapid assessment/urgent reviews on Childrens Day Care Unit
    • To oversee & support weekly nurse-led clinics providing safety & lifestyle advice and rescue medication training
  • To attend monthly Ketogenic clinic & follow up MDT meeting.
  • To attend, co-ordinate, develop & organise the management of a robust transition service for CYP with epilepsy, running a bi-monthly clinic in conjunction with the adult epilepsy service.
  • To assist and support with running a VNS clinic with named Consultant Neurologist
  • Provide extended outreach through home, nursery and school visits across LLR, to deliver direct care, education and support for CYP and their families as required.
  • Contribute written evidence for Educational Health Care Plans that reflect the individual needs of the CYP with epilepsy.
  • Participate in the provision of dedicated nurse-led telephone clinics ( along with other ENSs), to ensure a timely response to phone calls from families regarding physical, mental and social concerns relating to their child or directly to the young person.
  • Act as an expert resource for CYP with epilepsy. By assessing, advising, & educating about their diagnosis, implementation of treatment and support that is planned to meet each individual's needs. Empowering them to manage their treatment regimes, to recognise any deterioration or acute episodes requiring immediate specialist attention and how to access appropriate support. This will be a dynamic process, evaluating their management through the use of interpersonal skills building a long term, trusting relationship recognising the dynamics of individual families, which will continue through to transition.
  • To be aware of child protection / safeguarding issues and take appropriate action should there be concerns involving case conferences and planning meetings.
