Job summary

The new appointee will work under the supervision of consultant in Transfusion Medicine to ensure a comprehensive, well managed and safe blood transfusion service for our patients.

The appointee will also work closely with colleagues in the Clinical Haematology Service which, although separately managed by a different directorate, works very closely with Laboratory Haematology and Transfusion Service.

This new post is available for a fixed term of 12 months, initially with the possibility of extension at the end of 12 months contract, subject to funding and mutual agreement.

This post is not a recognised UK training post. Nevertheless, MYDoc doctors will have a named supervisor and be supported in undertaking scheduled educational opportunities to consolidate and develop alongside their experiential learning, with certificated outcomes or credentialing to support career progression through other routes.

This post is offered on a full time 10 Programmed Activity basis (9 DCC PAs and 1 SPA PAs) although less than full time applications will be considered. The University Hospitals of Leicester UHL Trust provides a range of services; this post is specifically based in Transfusion Medicine.

Main duties of the job

The post holder may be required to participate in an out of hours on rota. Other tasks will include:

  • Involvement in relevant multi-disciplinary teams and meetings
  • Involvement in relevant patient clinical administration duties
  • Teaching and supervision of junior medical staff and other clinicians as appropriate
  • Active involvement in audit and clinical governance including service improvement activities
  • Active involvement in clinical research

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be expected to deliver the following key roles, noting that this is not intended to be an exhaustive list of duties such as:

  • To provide clinical support and leadership to blood transfusion laboratories across the three UHL hospital sites.
  • To develop and support a comprehensive Patient Blood Management Programme to support safe and effective use of blood across all clinical services within the Trust.
  • To develop clinical guidelines for appropriate and safe use of blood components.
  • To develop education and training packages in blood transfusion.
  • To actively contribute to appropriate use of blood audits.
  • To closely work with members of the Hospital Transfusion Team and the Trust Transfusion Committee to deliver its annual plans and key performance indicators.
  • To provide strategic leadership and support in developing and improving blood transfusion service.
  • To participate in local, regional & national audit and quality improvement projects in transfusion medicine.
  • To participate in the departmental and the Trust Clinical Governance and Risk management processes, including regular attendance at Mortality and Morbidity meetings.
  • To supervise and support junior medical staff, Biomedical Scientists and Transfusion Practitioners.
  • To teach and train haematology StRs, CMT and Foundation trainees, Transfusion Practitioners and Biomedical Scientists in blood transfusion.
