Job summary

As a Fetal Wellbeing Lead, the post holder will work as part of a dynamic team in delivering an effective service supporting managers and colleagues to meet the objectives of the national maternity transformation programme, SVBLv3. Ockenden IEAs and Maternity Incentive scheme to deliver the local transformation plan to achieve better outcomes for women and babies. for women and babies. The NHS Long Term Plan has reiterated the NHS's commitment to reducing stillbirth, maternal mortality, neonatal mortality, serious brain injury and pre-term births. An important component of the transformation workstream is effective fetal monitoring during labour and this is part of the national Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle. The role supports the organisation in driving transformation as well as value for money in planning and delivering a high-quality service. The role is designed to build a combination of subject matter expertise and technical skills to develop strong service delivery ensuring effective fetal monitoring during labour. It aims to build on the current practice of achieving healthy birth outcomes for babies who are born in our maternity unit.

Main duties of the job

Act as a positive role model through the provision of effective professional leadership for relevant clinical areas and demonstration of competent and accountable clinical practice.

Act as an advisor/educator and role model to less experienced members of MDT to ensure appropriate care is planned, implemented and evaluated

To provide on a regular basis positive feedback to colleagues and identify and disseminate learning from good outcomes.

To partake in the regional Maternity Clinical Network Electronic Fetal Monitoring Group, acting as a conduit for information sharing between the Trust and the region.

Using effective clinical leadership skills, promote a supportive collaborative team working environment that inspires colleagues to encompass all the Trust values, aims and objectives to meet the Trust's vision.

Communicate complex data effectively to CMG meetings and clinical teams to ensure engagement in shared learning from audit findings.

Facilitate effective communication within the multi-disciplinary team, engaging all members with the roll out of new fetal monitoring guidance and competency assessments.

Represent UHL at regional and National fetal monitoring forums and work Collaboratory

Promote and market the activities of the service both internally and externally (where appropriate) contributing to the sharing of good practice ideas/learning and teaching. Actively engages with external partner organisations where appropriate to role.

Service Delivery & Development

  • To drive delivery of a range of quality initiatives linked to Element 4 of the Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle
  • To improve clinical decision making by implementing and help embedding the EBC learn and support tool kit
  • To lead and facilitate a programme aimed at equipping Midwives and Obstetricians to increase the knowledge and competence in identifying fetal wellbeing, potential fetal compromise and actual fetal compromise in all clinical settings
  • To ensure staff assess fetal wellbeing in the context of a womans health, pregnancy, gestation and stage of labour
  • To develop staff awareness in recognising factors that could contribute to misinterpretation of Cardiotocographs (CTGs) and impaired clinical decision making
  • To ensure that there are robust systems in place to monitor training, specifically the requirement that all staff who care for women in labour undertake annual training and competency assessment on Cardiotocograph (CTG) interpretation
  • To work in partnership with the education team to create and implement the competency resource to support midwives in undertaking intelligent intermittent auscultation of the fetal heart in low risk women in line with guidance
  • To ensure staff can intelligently auscultate the fetal heart in labour in the midwifery led unit and at home, and increase confidence of staff in auscultating the fetal heart intermittently
  • To support staff to enhance their skills in reducing risk within their clinical practice, with a focus on human factors

To maintain an accurate and effective record keeping system, collecting statistical data and writing reports on a regular basis, and presenting to appropriate forums within and external to Trust.

Demonstrate a high level of commitment to and enthusiasm for research, evidence based practice, audit and education in the clinical area.

Teach and assist others to develop professionally, reaching their full potential with fetal monitoring.
