Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Registered Clinical Scientist in the Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory in Leicester. The lab is a busy ISO 15189 accredited Local Genomic Laboratory, part of the East Genomic Laboratory Hub led by the Cambridge laboratory. Based in the Leicestershire Genetics Centre at the Leicester Royal Infirmary it is co-located with the Clinical Genetics Service with whom there are close links.
The lab provides a constitutional and acquired diagnostic service, including molecular pathology testing, and is a key part of the Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Links (HMDL) Service for Leicestershire, Northampton and Rutland. As part of the pathology department at UHL, where there is a strong focus on pathology integration, the team work closely with haematology and cellular pathology services as well as with the Leicester Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory at the University of Leicester.
As part of the interview process candidates will be asked to prepare a 10 minute presentation on a recent case study, project or clinical audit that they have been involved in.

Main duties of the job
- To perform high-quality, accurate cytogenetic, microarray and molecular pathology analysis across the sample range, which involves working with a high level of concentration and visual skills. This involves the use of microscopy, an image analysis system, microarray software and related bioinformatic packages and relevant PCR and NGS software.
- To provide appropriate interpretation and prepare informative reports to referring clinicians, which includes recommendations for future testing and clinical outcomes, under the guidance of registered scientists, the Section Heads or Head of Service.
- To check the accuracy of the cytogenetic/microarray/molecular pathology analysis including the interpretation and report-writing of the analysis performed by registered scientist colleagues.
- To participate in staff rotation through all laboratory sections to achieve experience and to assist in the full range of procedures.
