Job summary

As a CESR you will have the opportunity to work alongside experts in in one of the busiest emergency departments in the UK.

The Leicester Royal Infirmary has the only Emergency Department serving the city of Leicester and the counties of Leicestershire and Rutland and is one of the busiest in the country, treating over 230,000 new patients, a quarter of whom are children. The ED incorporates:

  • 12 Resuscitation bays
  • 32 bay Majors area
  • Injuries area with 10 cubicles
  • Separate Paediatric ED with 12 rooms and 8 bays
  • 16 bed Emergency Decisions unit
  • Emergency Frailty Unit

You will be provided with lots of personal developmental support, including:

  • A clinical and education supervisor
  • Designated study days andaccess toTeaching Programmes specifically designed to equip you with the tools for Emergency Medicine as well as opportunities to attend other established training courses

As an Emergency Senior Trust Grade you will carry out initial assessments and clinical investigations to ensure the patients receive the best care.

The role will entail you supervising your Junior Trust Grade colleagues and offering clinical support. As a centre of contact you will be working closely with other Emergency Department professionals, Consultant Leads, Education Team and Medical Staffing Team.

Main duties of the job

Clinically you will be expected to maintain a high standard of clinical care for patients and their families attending the department. Working at middle grade level with direct consultant support on the clinical floor it would be anticipated you clerk patients in order of clinical priority, make and initiate management plans. You will be expected to support the more junior doctors, Foundation Year levels 1 & 2 and Junior Trust Grade equivalents, in their decision making and management of patients.

At the start of your appointment you will have a supernumerary period to gain a better understanding of how the department works and familiarise yourself with the IT systems we are using within the Emergency Department.

This includes:

  • Nerve Centre
  • ICE
  • PACS
  • ICRIS

To be successful in this position you need to have a minimum of 6 months experience in an Emergency setting. We are looking for someone who will demonstrate a positive attitude and will work well within a team, while also having the ability to use their initiative. The Emergency department is a very fast paced, busy environment so the ideal candidate should be able to work under pressure with the support of their peers.

The Emergency Department at the Leicester Royal Infirmary is one of the busiest in the UK with good standards of care and performance. Our aim is to be one of the best acute and emergency services providers in the UK over the next five years.

This is an exciting time to work in Leicester: we have a new A&E department which combines the emergency department and Admission wards. The adult department including a main entrance, initial assessment, minor injuries and illnesses, majors and Resus as well as an Acute Medical Unit, Acute Care bay, Emergency Frail Unit, Acute Frailty Unit and Emergency Decisions Unit

At Leicester we have a designated Education team comprising of a Lead Consultant, two Registrars and one administrator. It is their roles to maintain the excellence in teaching and education we have grown to expect.

Our Senior trust grades will be given the opportunity to book into CBD sessions, SIM sessions in our very own, in house simulation room, bookable practical skills as well as following a specific junior trust grade teaching programme throughout the year.

The topics for discussion constantly changes based on feedback from our trust grades, however, every other week there is a set topic that is taught, followed by a SIM and then an opportunity to present to sign off some of your competencies.
