To qualify for the apprenticeship role the minimum criteria is:-

  • that you must have GCSE in English and Maths
  • you do not have a degree/higher qualification
  • have not completed an apprentice programme in the past

A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join our dynamic, supportive Radiotherapy engineering team based at Leicester Royal Infirmary in an apprenticeship role. As an apprentice, you will be working towards achieving the skills, knowledge and behaviours to fulfil that role, supporting the Radiotherapy treatment of cancer patients.

The appointment will be made at Annex 21 of Agenda for Change Band 5.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for someone to invest in for the long term, who wants to stay in Leicester and enjoy a fulfilling career where every day is different and you are directly impacting on and contributing to the care of cancer patients in the region.

The Level 6 apprenticeship lasts a minimum of 36 months and will provide an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to learn fundamental techniques to fault-find, service and maintain the Linear Accelerators, CT scanners, Brachytherapy and Orthovoltage treatment units, and associated equipment, which use ionising radiation safely and effectively for cancer treatment.

We will support you to gain a B.Sc. (Hons) in Healthcare Science (Clinical Engineering) at the UWE, Bristol and provide you with practical training locally. This is an opportunity for a motivated individual to enter a field that is extremely short of trained workers, with the aim of ensuring that you are eligible to join the Register of Clinical Technologists at the end of the training period.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The technical support section of the Radiotherapy Department provides technical and engineering services in support of high-risk radiotherapy. The section also provides electronics Research & Development expertise, including design services and small scale integrated manufacturing facilities for clinical electronics projects. The highly trained staff gives comprehensive advice on scientific and technical aspects of medical technology applied to radiotherapy.

The section has a prime role to ensure that highly complex Linear Accelerators (Linacs) and other Radiotherapy equipment operate safely and effectively with a minimum of downtime for the benefit of patients, clinical staff and the Trust, achieved by maintaining and repairing the equipment, which currently includes 4 linear accelerators, 2 CT scanners and1 superficial radiotherapy unit.

The Post holder will develop highly specialised technical expertise founded on formal training and in-depth experience of fault diagnosis on Linacs and other types of radiotherapy treatment machines. The Post holder will work in a supported learning environment to undertake a development programme leading to a National Standard as part of an apprenticeship programme. Key aspects of the job are to:

  • Gain a Healthcare Science Practitioner (Clinical Engineering) Degree, BSc(Hons) during a 3 year apprenticeship programme, via a part-time degree course in the University of the West of England, Bristol
  • Gain experience and competence in the technical and engineering support to a radiotherapy service including scheduled maintenance, emergency and planned repair, calibration and quality assurance (QA) checks of specialist, high value radiation treatment and associated equipment within a hospital environment.
  • To achieve registration with the Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT) upon successful completion of the apprenticeship.
