Job summary

Are you motivated, enthusiastic and passionate about providing high quality scientific support? We are looking for an experienced Radiation Protection Adviser to join our friendly team to provide advice to the Trust and to act as deputy head of Radiation Protection & Radiology Physics.

Please note this vacancy requires the ability to travel and work across all the Trust sites.

Main duties of the job

o To act as the lead RPA for the Trust.

o To advise senior managers on the content of policies and procedures regarding the use of radiation.

o To provide expert advice and to take a leading role in developing policies and procedures designed to keep staff, patients, and visitors safe from radiation sources.

o Participate in risk assessments on all new radiation equipment and techniques where ionising radiation is used.

o To advise on specification, selection, commissioning, acceptance, routine performance measurements and reviewing policy on replacement of highly complex staff and patient critical radiological equipment.

o To provide advice on radiation safety issues to committees governing research and development within their professional scope of practice.

o To advise on department plans for responding to major incidents involving radiation.

o To respond to major incidents involving radiation, if available, and to provide specialist advice on contamination monitoring of casualties.

o To assist in the nationwide NAIR scheme, to be a first responder and advise emergency services in the event of an incident involving radiation in a public place.

o Where appropriate, to liaise with external regulatory bodies (HSE, CQC, EA, etc) and assist in inspections.

o To assist in the development of business plans for Radiation Protection Service development commensurate with strategic developments across the Trust and other organisations.

Pilgrim Hospital Boston is situated in beautiful countryside and serves the communities in the South Lincolnshire area. It provides all major specialties and a 24-hour major accident and emergency service.

Grantham and District Hospital serves the communities of Grantham and the local area. It provides ambulatory paediatric and accident and emergency services.

Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust (LCHS) and United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust (ULHT) have come together in a Group arrangement, with the goal of improving the care provided to patients across the county.

This will not constitute a formal merger of the two organisations, but will bring the Trusts together under a single Board and Executive Leadership Team, with the goal of improving the care that is provided to patients both in the community and in hospitals across Lincolnshire. Both Trusts will retain their separate statutory names and legal obligations.The Group will be known as Lincolnshire Community and Hospitals NHS Group (LCHG).

  • MSc in medical physics or radiation physics
  • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration as a Clinical Scientist
  • Registered with RPA2000 as a Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA)

Desirable

  • RWA registration with RPA2000
  • MPE registration with RPA2000
  • Doctoral-level qualification in a relevant subject area
  • Registration on the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) Higher Specialist Scientist Register
  • Fellow of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine

Previous experience

Essential

  • Ability to act as lead RPA across all areas of the Trust
  • Evidence of significant experience at post-registration level as a Clinical Scientist in radiation protection and radiological physics

Desirable

  • Experience working with radioactive substances
  • Experience in the provision of a medical physics service
  • Experience in business planning
  • Experience of budget management

Evidence of particular knowledge, skills, and aptitudes

  • Extensive specialist knowledge of radiation protection and radiological physics

  • Ability to communicate scientific concepts to other staff
