Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Rapid Access Colorectal Nurse Practitioner. This is a new role utilising established speciality knowledge to guide patients safely through the pathway.

There is a potential for this to be a training post starting at band 7 and developing within the role to band 8A

The post holders will work Trust-wide, ULHT. Caseload management of all patients awaiting results on the Lower GI colorectal Rapid Access Colorectal Cancer (RACC) Pathway.

They will review all referrals, investigations and results to formulate an ongoing plan which will include the advanced decision making surrounding discharge back to referrer, step down to 18 week pathway, refer on to additional services trust wide and request additional tests required to complete the investigations for a timely diagnosis.

Main duties of the job

  • Independently assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate treatments and interventions for all patients presenting with a suspected lower GI cancer on the RACC pathway
  • Undertake physical examination as indicated by the patient's condition; autonomously analysing complex clinical signs and investigation results to consider differential diagnoses and diagnose conditions, initiating treatment as required.
  • Perform clinical procedures appropriate to the history and physical examination of the patient, including further invasive testing and treatments requiring highly developed skills and precision.
  • Request investigations such as blood, urine and other laboratory tests, ultrasound scans, radiological investigations such as computed tomography (CT) scans, MRI & CTC in accordance with IR(ME)R regulations and as local policy allows.

  • Physical assessment and History qualification (Degree Level or masters level)
  • Non-medical prescribing Qualification

  • Substantial post registration relevant experience within Colorectal Nursing
