Job summary

Due to promotion of the previous post holder, an opportunity has arisen for a part time (0.8 wte/30 hours) Band 6 Dietitian working in Oncology at Pilgrim hospital, Boston.

This is a great opportunity to advance your dietetic career and gain experience in the specialist area of oncology, working with patients with variety of oncological diagnoses . You will require the skills to manage your own caseload independently and demonstrate excellent team working skills. Prior experience of working with cancer patients is preferable, but we are able to provide training for those applicants with minimal oncology experience.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate excellent clinical and communication skills and an interest and some experience in the care of patients in this patient group within the NHS. They should have a practical, forward-thinking approach to service development and evaluation and the ability to work singlehanded as well as part of a team. You will be supported with your personal development goals and have regular clinical supervision and peer support.

NHS experience essential and being a member of special interest groups in the BDA is preferable.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide a specialist oncology service to adults.
  • Ensuring good communication links with other sites.
  • Provision of day to day oncology service in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
  • Evidence based practice eg to be in line with BDA, NICE and local trust guidance.
  • To provide advice on the appropriate use of specialist dietary products, equipment, feeding tubes, their care and possible complications.
  • To contribute to and develop trust policies and procedures relevant to the patient demographic.
  • To provide assessments of nutritional status and reduce the risk of malnutrition in the caseload.
  • To provide training on relevant topics for patients, carers and staff members.

Job responsibilities

  1. To provide a high standard of clinical care ensuring safe and effective assessment of nutritional diagnosis, taking into account medical condition, environment and lifestyle using highly developed clinical reasoning skills.
  2. To work in partnership with the patients and/or carers to develop, implement and review nutritional plans based on a complex analysis of clinical nutritional aspects, including biochemistry, anthropometry, and the patients clinical profile, as well as considering the patients distress and financial implications of the plan. Devise means to evaluate progress towards goals.
  3. To attend relevant MDT and case conferences.
  4. To provide sensitive communication, written and verbal advice to patients, carers and staff, whilst demonstrating an understanding of the nature and effects of some information and of barriers to effective communication e.g. sensory impairment and unrealistic expectations.
  5. Demonstrate empathy and understanding of social, psychological, ethnic and religious factors which effect compliance.
  6. Achieve competency level appropriate for the clinical caseload.
  7. To liaise with and provide expert opinion on dietetic issues directly contributing to the care of patients, to medical and nursing staff, GPs, district nurses and community teams.
  8. To provide specialist advice to Dietetic colleagues working in other clinical areas with regards to the care of patients within this speciality.
  9. To adhere to the standards, policies and procedures of the Trust and Department and the BDA, Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and associated legislation e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act.
  10. To work collaboratively with members of the multi-disciplinary team, ensuring effective and appropriate clinical decision-making, both within the Trust and with external agencies.
  11. Attend Regional Oncology meetings as required .
  12. Participate in the training of student dietitians including supervision, assessments, tutorials and feedback to students. Training is to be adapted to the needs of the student on an individual basis.
  13. Provide specialist oncology advice to the Nutrition Advisory group as required.
  14. To identify own training and development needs and those of the team including the development of competencies. Active participation in the delivery of training opportunities for staff and students, including those from other teams and disciplines.
  15. To maintain own continuing professional development and use reflective practice to evaluate and update current practice. To promote a learning environment and culture within the clinical team
  16. To undertake governance activities, including: induction, supervision, appraisal, negotiating personal development plans, mandatory training, health and safety, risk management and audit and manage this within the clinical team.
  17. To produce or review diet sheets and nutritional resources as required, in line with current guidelines and evidence based practice.
  18. To act as line manager/supervisor for Band 5/B4/B3 as appropriate.
