DEPARTMENT OF TRAUMA AND ORTHOPAEDICS

The Orthopaedic Department at ULHT is administratively part of a Trust-wide Clinical Business Unit. The speciality is based at Lincoln County Hospital and includes sessions at Pilgrim Hospital, Boston, Grantham and District Hospital, John Coupland Hospital at Gainsborough and Louth County Hospital. The speciality functions with a good level of independence for day to day activities and has an overall budget of approximately £10m.

There are 3 laminar flow theatres in Lincoln County Hospital, 3 in Boston, 4 in Grantham and one in Louth, which are used for elective and trauma surgery.

Since August 2018 when our Trust became one of the national pilot sites for the GIRFT program, orthopaedic services have been reconfigured across the Trust with major improvements in patient waiting times and avoidance of cancellations. Currently ULHT is performing as one of the top two Trusts in several GIRFT metrics.

Trauma surgery and complex elective surgery are carried out at Lincoln and Boston. Paediatric elective surgery is provided at Lincoln. Louth is our designated centre for day case surgery. Grantham Hospital has become the designated unit for elective inpatient surgery including primary hip and knee arthroplasty. Paediatric clinics are provided at Lincoln, Boston and Grantham, with dedicated paediatric outpatient settings at Grantham and Boston. A comprehensive range of Orthopaedic Services are provided at Lincoln County Hospital, supported by dedicated nursing care, ITU, Orthotics, pain management, and rehab facilities. Although we dont have a spinal service, we see spinal trauma when on call and are supported by spinal service from QMC Nottingham.

The paediatric orthopaedic unit at ULHT is well established, it offers treatment for a wide range of conditions such as paediatric hip, knee, foot and ankle conditions, in addition to neuromuscular conditions, limb reconstruction, paediatric trauma, bone infection and paediatric upper limb disorders. The paediatric orthopaedic unit is staffed by 3 Fellowship trained consultants, 3 Specialty doctors and an advanced care practitioner. Elective paediatric orthopaedic surgery is performed in Lincoln while there are dedicated paediatric orthopaedic clinics at Lincoln county hospital, Pilgrim hospital, Grantham hospital and Louth hospital. We have weekly Ponseti and one-stop DDH clinics including open access to USS as well as separate dedicated MDT neuromuscular and limb reconstruction clinics.

We have received favourable feedback from the paediatric GIRFT programme on both initial and follow up visits and are an active part of the East Midlands Childrens Orthopaedic Society (EMCOS).
