Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic experienced screener/grader or optometrist to join the Lincolnshire Diabetic Eye Screening Programme at United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust as an Advanced Technician SLB .

Applicants should have excellent knowledge of the Diabetic Eye Screening Programme and clinical processes within it.

Full training for the post will be given but all applicants must have hold a health screener qualification or have been registered with the General Optical Council for a minimum of two years.

The Advanced Technician will provide Slit Lamp Biomicroscopy services for the Diabetic Eye Screening Programme patients in Lincolnshire. Providing specialised advice and testing contributing to the identification, diagnosis and management of Diabetic Retinopathy.

Working across the county, the Advanced Technician will work alongside the Screening team in providing the National DES Programme in Lincolnshire.

Main duties of the job

Provide specialised testing to DESP patients in clinical settings

To liaise with and give detailed medical information to Consultant Ophthalmologists, GP's and patients as necessary in order to establish a high quality co-ordinated service

To work alongside the Clinical Lead, Programme Manager, Failsafe Manager, Screener/Graders and Administration Staff in the delivery of community base diabetic eye screening services.

Work autonomously to provide high standard testing according to NHS England and Screening standards

To participate in annual Individual Development Review and to establish and maintain a Personal Development Plan to ensure there is ongoing enhancement and development of clinical knowledge and expertise in order to undertake specialist roles.

  • Post Graduate Diploma or equivalent experience.
  • For Optometric candidates registration with the General Optical Council and 2 years' experience post registration with General Optical Council/For Non Optometric candidates City and Guilds Diabetic Retinopathy units 1 to 8 or equivalent health screener qualification and current experience of photographic grading to national standards
  • For Non Optometric candidates City and Guilds Diabetic Retinopathy units 1 to 8 or equivalent health screener qualification and current experience of photographic grading to national standards
  • Willingness to undergo training as necessary to undertake role

Desirable

  • Post-graduate optometric qualifications e.g. College of Optometrists, Higher Diploma.

Previous Experience

Essential

  • Advanced theoretical knowledge in a range of clinical areas in particular Diabetic Retinopathy.
  • Ability to competently undertake specialist advanced clinical extended roles.
  • Knowledge of a Slit Lamp Biomicrosocopy and its use
  • Knowledge of clinical matters beyond direct clinical role such as other common eye disease not related to diabetes.
  • Experience working with wide range of patients including impaired patients, physically disabled and people with learning disabilities.
  • Broad understanding of Diabetic Eye Screening Programmes including primary/secondary care interface, NHS service provision.
  • Knowledge and experience of clinical governance, in particular clinical audit.
