Job summary

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic clinical scientist in diagnostic radiology to support the provision of radiation protection and radiology physics services to the Trust and other organisations.

For suitable candidates without HCPC registration or specialist training we will consider appointment to a lower band and support the candidate to achieve HCPC registration via an equivalence pathway (https://www.ahcs.ac.uk/equivalence/), or via an in-service Scientist Training Programme route.

Main duties of the job

The post holders main role will be

  • To undertake radiation protection assessments of facilities and medical equipment that emit ionising radiation.
  • To undertake research and development in scientific aspects of the work of the department.
  • Assist with the training of clinical scientists and technologists and provide training for other staff groups as appropriate.
  • Participates in the provision of scientific support to non-ionising radiation services (UV, lasers, MRI, ultrasound, etc).

The successful candidate will join a friendly team of scientists and technologists providing comprehensive diagnostic radiology and radiation protection support to users of radiation. All staff within the team are encouraged to contribute towards the development of the service and the introduction of new imaging technologies and techniques. The department actively encourages scientific development and professional activities. You will need excellent communication and organisational skills, together with a demonstrable ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team. The post holder will be based at Lincoln and be able to travel to other hospitals in the area.

Essential

  • MSc in Medical Physics or Radiation Physics, or equivalent Corporate Membership of IPEM HCPC registration as a clinical scientist
  • HCPC registration as a clinical scientist

Experince

Essential

  • Experience in the use of radiation in healthcare, medical imaging evaluation, radiation detection and measurement.

Desirable

  • Experience in the use of non-ionising radiation in healthcare.

Skills

Essential

  • Specialist knowledge of the techniques employed to measure the performance and radiological safety of a range of X-ray imaging equipment.
  • Knowledge of national standards, professional and other guidelines relevant to the specialist area. Knowledge of radiation protection legislation in healthcare and biomedical research
  • Ability to test a wide range of diagnostic X-ray imaging equipment, analyse highly complex data and produce written reports within a defined timescale.
  • Ability to communicate scientific concepts to other staff, work as a member of a team and with staff in other disciplines

Desirable

  • Ability to test a range of non-ionising equipment. Computer programming skills. Ability to give presentations at scientific meetings
