Job summary

The Cardiac Catheter Labs and Cardiac Day Ward are busy areas which serve the elective and acute needs of patients undergoing Cardiology procedures. We are based in the Cardiology Building at Castle Hill Hospital. The Theatre Support Worker will assist the Cardiac Day Ward and Cath Lab Manager in the delivery of safe, high quality clinical care to patients at all times in both areas. The post holder will work under direct and indirect supervision of the Registered Nurse / Operating Department Practitioner and will be provided with appropriate training for the clinical setting in which they are working. Where additional skills training is identified as required in the job description, the post holder will not undertake those duties until training has been completed (except as part of the supervised learning experience). Once trained and deemed competent, the post holder will undertake clinical tasks and duties which are within the scope of this job description. This is a dynamic and busy department which has a lot of learning opportunities to enhance your skills.

This role requires commitment to a work-based learning and development programme to undertake a Level 2 or 3 HCSW Apprenticeship, including the Care Certificate.

Main duties of the job

main duties of the job includes working on a rotational basis between the Cardiac Day Ward and the Cardiac Catheter Labs. Each area requires its own set of skills and support to be provided to the patient and Registered Nursing staff.

On the Day Ward, this will involve cannulation, venepuncture, clinical observations, and supporting patients with their nutrition, personal hygiene, mobility and supporting their discharge. You will participate in the pre-assessment clinics to do elective patient's ECGs, bloods and swabs prior to their admission working alongside the Cardiology Nurse Practitioners to facilitate this service. You will also be involved in ensuring that patients get meals, drinks and assisting with personal cares before and after procedures in the Cath Labs.

In the Cath Labs this will involve portering patients to/from any of the wards at Castle Hill Hospital to/from the Cath Labs. Supporting the Registered Staff in the Labs with the smooth running of the cases, using electronic scanning equipment to register all stock items used for a case. You will also be part of the wider support staff team to learn to do stock rotation, maintenance of stock levels, ordering and ensuring safe and appropriate levels of stock at all times.
