Job summary

The Team Leader is required to control a team of Engineering Technicians, Senior Technicians, Craftspersons and Maintenance Assistants, employed in the day-to-day Estates maintenance activity throughout the Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and additionally support Estates Managers in control of contracted out Engineering Works.

Please note that this advertised vacancy does not meet the UKVI eligibility requirements for a Skilled Worker Visa and therefore HUTH would not be able to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship for this role.

Main duties of the job

  • Leadership & Coordination: Provide effective team leadership across mechanical engineering operations, overseeing both routine and non-routine planned, corrective, and emergency works. Supervise directly employed staff and contractors, ensuring seamless collaboration with other trade disciplines.

  • Workforce Planning: Schedule and allocate workloads using planning tools and boards. Delegate complex tasks to skilled trade staff, ensuring optimal labour resource utilisation and operational efficiency.

  • Technology Integration: Implement and manage Personal Data Assistant (PDA) devices to streamline work activity tracking and reporting.

  • Cross-Trade Support: Provide cover across all trade disciplines during staff absences due to sickness or holidays. Participate in recruitment panels to select and onboard new team members.

  • Staff Development & Compliance: Conduct performance development reviews, identify training needs (including statutory and mandatory requirements), and ensure adherence to standards of conduct, timekeeping, and discipline.

  • HR & Wellbeing Oversight: Manage staff welfare through return-to-work interviews, Occupational Health referrals, and disciplinary/grievance procedures. Promote a culture of lifelong learning by implementing personal development plans aligned with the Trust's performance review framework.

  • To have completed and hold a BTEC/HNC/Diploma in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering plus 3 years relevant experience OR a Degree plus 1 year relevant experience OR equivalent practical and theoretical engineering knowledge acquired through a diploma or equivalent experience.

Desirable

  • oIOSH Certificate for Managing Safely oSuitable leadership qualification oAuthorised Person for Pressure Systems oAuthorised Person for Ventilation oAuthorised Person Piped Medical Gases.

Knowledge, Training & Experience

Essential

  • Must be able to demonstrate previous leadership experience in non-routine maintenance of complex engineering plant and equipment with a broad understanding of other building and engineering disciplines. Experience of liaison with and supervising building and engineering contractors.

Desirable

  • oComputer systems experience oPrevious leadership and engineering experience in a hospital environment oResuscitation/First Aid Training. oInfection Control Awareness Training.
