Job summary

The post holder is responsible for ensuring the effective running of the ward, providing clinical leadership and managerial support in the absence of the Senior Sister, working as a highly skilled member of the multidisciplinary team, practising a high standard of clinical care and being key to improve the patient's experience.

The post holder is responsible for ensuring the effective running of the ward, providing clinical leadership and managerial support in the absence of the Senior Sister, working as a highly skilled member of the multidisciplinary team, practising a high standard of clinical care and being key to improve the patient's experience. The post holder will supervise the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care during their span of duty and support and encourage the concept of team working, team development and collaboration between team members.

Job responsibilities

Responsible for providing direct care and supervising junior staff in the delivery of care

Responsible for ensuring that care standards are maintained for the span of duty

Enables patients to maintain their activities of daily living

Ordering and obtaining samples for diagnostic tests

Responsible for identifying and acting upon areas where standards of care, patient safety and/or quality can be improved

In the absence of the Senior Sister is required to resolve problems associated with the running of the ward including taking first line actions as appropriate to remedy issue

Responsible for ensuring that appropriate supplies and equipment are available to support the delivery of direct patient care, and enabling team members to carry out their duties

Responsible for the preparation and setting up of the clinical environment including routine safety equipment checks

Responsible for ensuring equipment within the working environment is maintained and in working order

Maintains the integrity and cleanliness of equipment ensuring correct use and storage

Responsible for reporting equipment faults and removing from the clinical area until repaired in accordance with Trust policy

Manage allocation of departmental resources efficiently and effectively taking account of budgeting implications
