Interstitial Lung Disease Specialist Nurse

Job summary

As a respiratory specialist nurse, the post holder is responsible for ensuring the effective running of the Interstitial lung disease (ILD) and Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) service in the absence of the Senior Respiratory Nurse Specialist.

The post holder is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care during their span of duty. They will undertake a range of duties to ensure the effective delivery of care. With support they will undertake specialist procedures, provide advice and on-going support to the client group. They will run nurse led clinics, be involved in Multidisciplinary team meetings, provide ward and telephone support and home visits.

As a senior nurse the post holder is responsible for providing specialist knowledge, advice, support and care to patients, carers and other health professionals relating pulmonary fibrosis (PF) and Pulmonary hypertension.

This is a developmental role depending on experience. The successful applicant will commence at band 6 and be expected to complete the non medical prescribing course. Once complete and fulfilling the band 7 criteria they will be elevated to that banding.

The post holder will contribute to the development of the service, undertaking research and audit within this speciality; developing protocols, procedures, standards and the tools to implement care.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertakes advanced clinical skills which may include;
  • Spirometry interpretation
  • Physical examination
  • Chest examination
  • Chest radiography interpretation
  • Phlebotomy
  • Assisting right heart catheterisation studies and delivering Nitric oxide
  • Provides specialist patient care to an allocated workload, for the span of duty
    • Assists the Lead Specialist Nurse in the implementation of corporate and nursing objectives
    • Plans care for patients, organising appointments and treatments
    • Responsible for managing and prioritising own workload against the needs of patients and service requirements
    • Delivers care interventions and specialist advice in a variety of settings within the hospital, patients' homes and peripheral hospitals.
