1.1 Applications are invited for the post of locum general surgery with a special interest in providing major trauma service.
1.2 Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Major Trauma Centre delivers a dynamic service for trauma patients across East Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. In addition to pathways for Major Trauma Network patients, HUHT benefits from numerous tertiary service referrals from the same areas. Our associated trauma unit hospitals are York, Scarborough, Grimsby & Scunthorpe.
1.3 The MTC service has seen significant development and investment over recent years and has an enthusiastic, high achieving team, including doctors, trauma coordinators, allied health care professionals (Physio, OT, SLT, and Psychology) and management teams.
Main duties of the job
As the service is currently evolving, major trauma consultants are in a unique position where each person's speciality knowledge can to develop service delivery and boost team skills. The role will include;
- Leading and co-ordinating the multi-disciplinary team response until patient discharge.
- Effectively contributing to the clinical management within the major trauma centre and trauma network.
- Undertaking ward rounds on major trauma patients; performing clinical reviews; examining relevant systems; checking relevant investigation results; ensuring that there are no missed injuries or gaps in treatment plans; answering initial questions from patients and relatives about injuries, sequelae, likely management plan and possible outcomes.
- Recognising when to call for earlier review from base specialities or other members of the multi-disciplinary team, and to refresh, re-prioritise, challenge or de-conflict parts of the management plan.
- Leading the placement and discharge arrangements for community care and on-going rehabilitation
- Initiating or performing all ward-based measures required to save life in an acutely deteriorating trauma patient (airway control, IV access and blood administration, chest decompression, application of tourniquet, accurate application of haemostatic pressure, ACLS resuscitation) whilst setting in place definitive arrangements for patient stabilisation.
