Job summary
Hull University Teaching Hospitals are seeking a Band 6 Senior Physiotherapist to join our highly skilled Therapy Team specialising in the treatment of Neurosurgical and Neuro-oncological patients across both inpatient and community services.
The post will be based within the Neurosurgical therapy team and the Macmillan Brain and CNS Community therapy team. You will rotate yearly between the 2 departments opposite another band 6 in the same role.
We require self-motivated, dynamic clinicians who are stimulated by challenge and are looking for the opportunity to improve their skills at a senior level. It is expected that you will have had experience working upon a Neurosurgical/oncological rotation.
You will gain experience, knowledge and skills in many specialist areas including Neurosurgical and ICU wards, Outpatient spinal fracture care and Neuro-oncological care.
Whilst working on both rotations support will be provided to enhance operational management skills and contributions to service planning, development and teaching. As a Senior Physiotherapist, the post holder will be a role model for their team and pride themselves on delivering high quality care and motivate their team to do the same.
The Neurosurgical/Neuro-oncological Therapy service is a forward thinking service committed to evidence based practice and continuous professional development. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in audit opportunities as they present themselves.
Main duties of the job
The post would suit a band 5 physiotherapist who has completed their core rotations or an experienced senior physiotherapist who has an interest in specialising in the management of Neurosurgical and Neuro-oncological conditions.

Neurosurgical Rotation responsibilities:
During the neurosurgery element of the rotation you will be involved in the provision of the following services:
- Critical Care management of Neurosurgical patients including traumatic brain injury and Spinal Cord Injury, involving respiratory management and rehabilitation.
- Pre and Post-operative management of elective and trauma neurosurgical patients across the neurosurgical inpatient wards.
- Management of patients undergoing Awake craniotomies during the pre-assessment and surgical management phase.
- Management of the Non orthopaedic patients within the Major Trauma Unit
- Delivery of the Physiotherapy led Spinal Fracture pathway specifically; fitting of orthoses, outpatient follow up of fracture patients, weekly meetings with Neurosurgical Consultant to discuss patient progression.
Macmillan Brain and CNS Rotation responsibilities:
During the Neuro-Oncological element of the rotation you will be required to:
- Provide a patient centred, evidence-based therapy service providing neuro-oncological specialist rehabilitation services to patients within their own homes. This will ensure quality of life and independence is maximised throughout the entire patient journey.
- Provide Specialist advice and support to inpatient services to enable timely discharge and reduce the risk of admission to acute services.
- Work closely with the wider Neuro-Oncological MDT (including Specialist Nurses, Neuro-oncologists, Neurosurgeons, Neuropsychologists) to co-ordinate high quality care for Neuro-Oncological Patients.
- Attend MDT meetings representing therapy component of patient management.
- Work within the wider oncological therapy service to ensure high quality provision of care for all patients.
