Job summary

SPFT are excited to invite applications for an accredited Arts Psychotherapist or Play Therapist to join our community team at our Coastal Sussex CAMHS based in Worthing.

The committed multidisciplinary team work with children and their families aged 5 - 18 with moderate to severe mental health difficulties and includes child psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, CBT and social workers.

The therapist appointed will be expected to undertake specialist assessment and treatment of children and young people alongside routine generic tasks such as offering Initial Mental Health Assessments and Lead Practitioner work. Given the complex nature of the work in CAMHS this post will suit a clinician who is confident and competent in working autonomously and has experience in these areas.

We welcome applications from all those with relevant qualifications and experience. The post may particularly suit those wishing to contribute creatively to a service within a transformation period. The successful applicant will need to demonstrate confidence in risk assessment and safeguarding children with severe mental health needs within complex family situations alongside an interest in shorter as well as longer term work as well as group work.

Main duties of the job

In addition to the therapy work, the therapist appointed will be expected to undertake some generic tasks such as:

Initial Mental Health Assessments and attend Multi-Disciplinary Team Meetings. Given the complex nature of the work in CAMHS, this post will suit a clinician who is competent in working autonomously and has experience in working with young people with mental health needs. The successful applicant will need to demonstrate confidence in communicating with professionals, assessing risk and safeguarding children with moderate to severe mental health needs, sometimes living with families who are under significant financial and psychological strain. An interest in working within a framework of Episodic Care, using outcomes to inform practice and also group work would be welcomed.

About us

Clinical supervision for this post will be offered by an experienced Arts Psychotherapist within the Trust as required by the relevant qualification. There will be opportunity to meet other therapists within the Arts and Play cohort through CPD events and/or Professional meetings and you will contribute to the development of the Arts Psychotherapy provision within SPFT.

We provide mental health and learning disability care for children, young people and adults across Sussex.

  • Professionally registered as specified in the same Appendix

Knowledge/Experience

  • Substantial experience of specialist psychological therapy (assessment, formulation and treatment), as specified in the same Appendix, maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse
  • A high level of competence in applying a psychological therapy to complex difficulties appropriate for this therapy with the client group, and a proven track record of delivering positive outcomes in this therapy
  • Experience of offering teaching, training and supervision within a demanding organisational context.
  • A clear and theoretically informed approach to supervision
  • Experience of representing psychological therapy within the context of multi-disciplinary care within a complex organisational context.
  • Experience of working with the particular client group served by the team/service
  • Knowledge of guidance and legislation in relation to the client group
  • A high-level specialist knowledge of the theory and practice of specialist psychological therapy as specified in the same appendix, as applied to the client group using this service
