Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to support a research project investigating the potential benefits of outdoor swimming for mental health. Although many participants report benefits to their mental health as a result of outdoor swimming, this is the first time a full-scale randomised controlled trial has been used to better understand the impact. The design also includes a significant qualitative component to explore the experience. The project is a full scale project which, if successful, may provide support for scaling up outdoor swimming courses as part of possible recovery interventions for people living with depressive symptoms.

As well as learning about nature-based approaches to mental health, the successful applicant will gain skills in assessment, data collection, quantitative and qualitative analysis and dissemination. The successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary team that includes a Clinical and a Counselling Psychologist, a Physiologist, a Statistician, a Health Economist, three medical doctors and two Co-applicants with their own lived experience.

There will be a team of research assistants, one Band 5 and two Band 4s working as part of this bigger team.

Main duties of the job

  • Regular attendance at research meetings
  • Liaison with key people involved in the study including research team members, link workers and the Clinical Trial Unit
  • Recruitment and assessment of potential participants and consenting under supervision of research team members
  • Supporting study participants during their participation in the study
  • Data collection
  • Data entry
  • Contribute to report writing and dissemination
  • May require evening working
  • Supporting the two Band 4 research assistants with study activities
  • Please note that this post does not require quantitative or qualitative data analysis

About the team:

The post holder will join a thriving research department, working alongside other research assistants working on a wide variety of research studies. There will be 3 Research Assistants working on the OUTSIDE 2 research study which will provide the opportunity for team working as well as building good working relationships with the wider OUTSIDE 2 research team. Research assistants in the team are well supported. We have a strong track record of research assistants in the department successfully applying for Clinical Psychology Doctoral Training and PhDs.

Accessibility:

There are opportunities to work remotely as well as in the R&D base and travelling between study sites is not required and will be kept to a minimum, however visits to the study sites may be possible.
