Hours of work: 37.5 to cover a shift pattern 14:00 - 02:00am (Tues, Wed, Thurs and Fri)

Base: Kendal Home Based Treatment Team (HBTT) or Barrow HBTT- Dane Garth, Barrow in Furness, LA14 4LF

An exciting opportunity to work alongside our Police colleagues in the South Cumbria area. The successful applicants will also collocate at the Police station, utilising a shared vehicle to work across South Cumbria.

The purpose of the Street Triage Team will be to provide an effective and timely intervention by police and appropriately skilled mental health professionals, for individuals suffering from mental ill health, creating an appropriate pathway in reduce unnecessary escalation to a crisis situation and/or attendance at the A&E department providing effective care for patients.

This Service will be accessible to people of all ages, where it is believed that they may have a mental illness; a learning disability; personality disorder or use substances; who come into contact with the police, outside of custody.

The team will assess the mental state of the individual and where applicable, include a face-to-face contact and advise if detention under the Mental Health Act is necessary.

Main duties of the job

The intention is to facilitate interactions and assessments in the most appropriate locations. Identify at the earliest opportunity the mental health needs of the individual and to ensure the most suitable access to support services. The team will provide signposting for those who do not meet the criteria for detention; with an emphasis on providing a prompt response to incidents.

The objectives of the Street Triage service are:

  • To improve the timeliness of response to individuals and their immediate families or carers, who are experiencing an acute deterioration in their mental health.
  • To improve treatment and support outcomes for individuals, who come into contact with the police, through early intervention and referral to mental health services.
  • To provide a coordinated approach between the police and mental health services: to ensure that people receive the right care, in the right place at the right time.
  • To reduce inappropriate extended use of emergency services, in responding to metal health needs, which impact upon the resilience of emergency services to respond to other types of incidents.

*The Bay £7k Welcome Bonus package applies to this role. The bonus is only available for people who are not currently employed (or who have not been employed in the last 12 months) by any NHS provider trust in the Lancashire & South Cumbria Integrated Care System in a like-for-like role; e.g. a Band 6 Registered Mental Health Nurse at another Trust in the LSC ICS would not be eligible for the bonus if moving to a Band 6 Registered Mental Health Nurse role at LSCFT. Bank only workers for Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust are eligible for the scheme if they have not held a substantive role in Lancashire & South Cumbria Integrated Care System in the last 12 months (subject to all other terms and conditions being met).These incentives are subject to recovery clauses within the first 24 months of employment. This bonus is applicable to any successful candidate whose interview for this role is conducted prior to 30th November 2023.

The Bay £7k Welcome Bonus package is designed to attract and retain the very best staff in post. The amount a new starter would receive is shown in the Welcome Bonus Payment Schedule below:

  • £3,000 after 2 months of employment (counted from start date with LSCFT)
  • £2,000 after 12 months
  • £2,000 after 24 month
