Job summary

Both HMP Altcourse and HMP Liverpool are looking to recruit a healthcare support worker to support the Integrated Mental Health teams.

This role will entail providing support to the healthcare professionals based in the Mental Health team at the prison.

To work unsupervised when performing clinical duties or group work, to assist with escort duties, internally and externally for visitors and patients.

To support with screenings, to assist with health promotion activities and awareness.

Main duties of the job

  1. Performing venepuncture, ECGs and physical health checks
  2. Updating clinical systems / care plans and prison databases
  3. Escorting internal and external visitors
  4. Performing group work
  5. Assisting with Health promotion
  6. Completing welfare checks on patients

Job responsibilities

To maintain up to date core skills, extended roles and learning needs as identified via PDPs.

To be able to respond appropriately to emergency situations.

To competently perform venepuncture / ECGs within the Health Centre as directed by the requesting clinicians.

To assist with the delivery of Health Promotion.

To assist clinicians with a variety of group sessions

To be responsible for input of own data into SystmOne

To operate the radio communications set when required and be conversant with the prison radio network procedures.

To assist and support with the healthcare Administration as directed

To report any adverse circumstances to the nurse in charge or manager

To undertake breakaway

To work within all current policies and procedures throughout the prison

To participate in research and audit within the service.

To demonstrate excellent interpersonal communications skills to communicate factual information to patients to overcome barriers to understanding.

To work collaboratively, sharing knowledge and experience with peers to provide support through teamwork. Participate in regular team meetings.

To demonstrate appropriate skills to deal with patients with challenging behaviour. Be able to adapt to the unpredictable demands of the patient and the needs of the service.

To assist with therapeutic monitoring of all relevant medication, being aware of data information system.

To be aware of patients well-being, taking into account mental, physical, security and potential violent issues, reporting any concerns to the nurse in charge.

To assist with escort duties of visitors to the Health Care department both internally and externally within the service guidelines.

To ensure that work is conducted in accordance with the Trusts Equality and Diversity Strategy and to contribute to its development.

To maintain responsibility for the Health & Safety aspects of the environment for self, colleagues and visitors.

To maintain quality control checks of all equipment within the Health Care department.

Essential

  • NVQ level 2 in care or demonstrate equivalent experience.

Desirable

  • Evidence of studying for NVQ Level 3 in care or other relevant skills/academic based course or working towards this.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Experience / knowledge of working within a secure environment and with people with mental health needs

Desirable

  • Smoking cessation trained.
  • Previous experience of phlebotomy, ECG recording and administrative work
