Job summary

The Security Supervisor will undertake first line management of all functional areas of the Security within the MSU & LSU and directly supervise and oversee Operational Security Grade staff.

The Security Supervisor will ensure that all operational practices conform to the specified security standards.

Main duties of the job

  1. The delivery of the department's security training strategy.
  2. This role provides a range of security related services throughout the Secure Division, which are an integral element in the safe and secure operation of medium & low secure provision.
  3. Provide first line management support to the reception staff, working in all operational/functional areas of the Security Department within security areas. The role is under the management of Security.
  4. Undertake all aspects of staff management for the areas providing regular updates and reports as required by management. Ensure any staffing shortfall is met through a range of intervention methods including providing cover when other alternatives have been exhausted.
  5. Monitor, record, amend and authorise all OSG's leave, mandatory training, and sickness. Conducting return to work interviews, PACE interviews and appraisals as required by HR Policy.
  6. Undertake administration duties as required by the role including the preparation of Deputy Director of Security ,Security Supervisor and Security Manager documentation in support of the Security Department, which may include preparing service plans and undertaking elements of financial management as well as issuesrelating to the collation and collection of security related intelligence.
  7. Actively supervise and support all OSGs in their tasks within The Control Room /Reception, Key Issue area, Visitors Reception, Search Areas, Vehicle Lock and foot patrols.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  1. The maintenance and operation of effective security systems to ensure the resilience of the MSU and LSU sites, internal physical security systems and visual site management systems. Regularly test and update systems to maintain the necessary security standard.
  2. oversee and at times direct all responses to alarm states which include, personnel attack alarms, ward disturbance alarm states, complex control, and fire.
  3. Transfer and manage access controls to the secure site during major incidents limiting access to authorised individuals only.
  4. Monitoring of all CCTV and radio systems which cover the external and internal secure areas of the MSU & LSU, coordinating responses to breaches of security.
  5. Operate and manage the integrated site security systems to prevent escape or attack upon the secure site from outside.
  6. Provide effective communications between the reception and all areas of the MSU & LSU sites, particularly the clinical areas and senior managers. To act in an effective manner when radio communications are disrupted and rectify problems that occurs.
  7. Ensure all appropriate systems are in place for escorts and patients on leave of absence. Ensuring all necessary documents are supplied
  8. Responsible for the planning and implementation of training packages for all Operational Security Grade staff on a wide variety of equipment of duties.Monitoring their ongoing development and ensuring progression is achieved.
  9. To liaise with and advise bronze, silver and gold commands, and emergency services during major incidents to advise on the MSU & LSU practical security systems and their capabilities.
  10. To attend all patient areas so effective monitoring of ward-based security equipment can be achieved. To ensure that all patient ID photographs are updated when required.
  11. Perform a daily audit of all Security locks and weekly audit of all Security keys ensuring practical application and management.
  12. Undertake performance monitoring and other audit processes as required.
  13. Ensure all relevant hospital policy and procedures are closely followed by all the functional areas being supervised ensuring compliance is achieved whilst causing minimum disruption to the normal operation of the hospital.
  14. Co-ordinate the work undertaken by various functional areas of Security having particular responsibility for the quality of services provided whilst maintaining the integrity of the secure areas.
  15. Plan and implement service developments following instruction by the Security Manager, preparing policy and procedure documents in support of service changes as required.
  16. Operation of hospital IT system including inputting of security entries and intelligence.
  17. Having carried out the appropriate advanced investigation skills training, carry out a variety of investigations as directed by the relevant authorities.
  18. Ensure the practical application of Health and Safety and Fire, Disturbance, Escape and critical incident procedures as required.
  19. Work is undertaken primarily within the MSU and LSU Units in a secure and confined area with restricted access, which may be claustrophobic to some individuals. The work will involve active monitoring of security systems and responding to alertstates at times the environment may be challenging, demanding and stressful and may involve noise pollution due to the frequent sounding of alarms on the electronic equipment. Ambient temperature and air quality fluctuates due to no direct access.
  20. To ensure within the MSU/LSU photographs of patients are taken in a timely manner and issued to those who require them when tasked.
  21. To work in other locations to manage or supervise as seen fit by the Head of Department.
