Job summary

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Psychologist to join the psychological therapies service of the St Helens Recovery Team. The team sits within the wider multidisciplinary Recovery Team and comprises of Clinical Psychologists, Counselling Psychologists, Cognitive Behavioural Therapists, specialist nurse practitioners and four other Assistant Psychologists. We also regularly offer placements to Trainee Clinical Psychologists.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role will be providing low intensity psychologically informed interventions to clients, both 1:1 and in group format. You will receive weekly supervision from a Clinical Psychologist and there will be opportunities to access further training to develop new skills. The interventions Assistant Psychologists in the team currently offer include:

Structured Psychological Support - a newly developed 10 session intervention aimed at supporting those who have relational and emotional difficulties

COPE - 1:1 or group coping skills delivered over 10 sessions based on Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) principles

Moving Towards Change - a three session intervention using Motivational Interviewing techniques aimed at helping clients build motivation and establish psychological goals

My Skills Toolbox - a three session intervention aimed at helping clients to understand how they cope and learn new skills to manage a crisis

1:1 Assistant Psychologist intervention - bespoke 1:1 intervention individually tailored to specific client needs e.g. psychoeducation around voice hearing, graded exposure etc.

The post holder may also offer support to the duty team as needed

  • Experience using computers for databases or data -analysis

  • Demonstrated high level ability to communicate sensitive information to service users, carers and colleagues in a way that facilitates engagement

  • A demonstrated ability to apply existing psychological knowledge to a mental health context

  • Experience of research evaluation and audit of the application of psychological principles to mental health problems
  • High level communication skills (written and verbal) including an ability to communicate and work in ? Experience of Clinical Health Psychology settings ? Experience/knowledge of Solution-Focused approaches ? Experience of working with 'expert patients' 27/4/22 settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive
