Job summary

Are you an experienced Network Engineer seeking an exciting opportunity to advance your career within the NHS? We have a fantastic opening for a skilled professional to join our team as a Network Engineer!

As a Network Engineer within NHS Informatics Merseyside, you will manage our intricate network infrastructure, ensuring the provision of secure and dependable network services to improve clinical operations and enhance patient outcomes. Your responsibilities will include designing and implementing network solutions and maintaining network security in compliance with relevant standards and policies.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art technologies, such as network automation, VoIP, wireless, and SD-WAN. You will be responsible for designing and implementing these solutions, in addition to providing technical support and troubleshooting when needed.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing network infrastructure and services to meet the NHS requirements
  • Providing expert technical support for network services
  • Ensuring network security and compliance with pertinent standards and policies
  • Identifying and resolving network issues to minimise downtime and optimise performance
  • Collaborating with other IT teams and stakeholders to deliver integrated solutions.

To excel in this role, you should have:

  • Demonstrable experience as a Network Engineer, preferably with expertise in Cisco network technologies
  • Comprehensive knowledge of network security best practices
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work under pressure

Job responsibilities

Functional Role

Network Engineer responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring network engineering performance and ensure system availability and reliability

  • Monitor system resource utilization, trending, and capacity planning

  • Trouble tickets worked through using ITIL guidelines

  • Configuring and installing various network devices and services (e.g., routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, VPN, QoS)

  • Support and maintenance for Cisco Call Manager and Mitel VoIP systems

  • Support and maintenance of Voice recording solutions

  • Support and maintenance of e-fax solutions

  • Support and maintenance for a SIP solution providing VoIP and e-fax services to over 10,000 subscribers

  • Perform network maintenance and system upgrades including service packs, patches, hot fixes and security configurations

  • Out of hours on call requirement in a rota with other senior team members

  • Lead on Network related P1 and Major Incidents

  • Provide Level-2/3 support and troubleshooting to resolve issues

  • Work within established configuration and change management policies to ensure awareness, approval and success of changes made to the network infrastructure

  • Select and implement security tools, policies, and procedures in conjunction with the companys security team

  • Liaise with vendors and other IT personnel for problem resolution

  • Provide mentorship for junior staff

Project Responsibilities

  • Engagement with internal and external organisations to assess requests for infrastructure or service changes under Project Management delivery

  • Provide advice for internal and external organisations to allow strategic decisions to be made concerning planned projects

  • Lead a team of network engineers in the execution of IT projects

  • Design organisational network security infrastructure and monitor its implementation

  • Write network status reports and deliver them to the management

  • Submit a regular report and update on the status of projects to the management and stakeholders

Personal Development Administration

  • Personal Development Reviews administration role for assigned junior staff within the Network Team

  • Mentorship for assigned junior staff members within the Network Team to enhance their skillset

  • Regular one to one meetings with assigned staff and guidance through the PDR process.

Compliance Responsibilities

  • Compliance with all mandatory training and HR requests

  • Compliance with all reasonable requests in regard to working hours and changes in role or responsibilities
