Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and suitably qualified Band C Specialist Dentist to work with our existing Special Care Specialists and Team within Mersey Care Community Dental Care Directorate.

You will have full registration with the GDC including specialist registration in Special Care Dentistry and relevant postgraduate qualifications. An NHS performer number is required on application or within 6 months of commencement of the post.

Main duties of the job

You will take a clinical leadership role in developing special care dentistry within the Directorate of Community Dental Health.

You will be responsible for the provision of advanced clinical care to patients with a disability or activity restriction that directly or indirectly affects their oral health.

This will include providing comprehensive dental care under sedation or general anaesthesia. Dental care may be provided in community, hospital or domiciliary settings as a flexible approach will be required in responding to the clinical care needs of these patients.

You will be responsible to the Clinical Director for

  • the provision of high quality preventive and treatment oral care services for people requiring special care
  • the development and management of dentists in the Directorate with a special interest in special care dentistry

Job responsibilities

To be responsible for the clinical leadership and clinical quality assurance of Special Care Dentistry provided by the Directorate of Community Dental Health. This role will be carried out within the context of the Directorates clinical governance system, working in conjunction with the Clinical Director

To take a clinical leadership role in developing specialist special care dental services within DCDH, including providing strategic advice to the Clinical Director.

To lead and participate as required in aspects of the DCDH Clinical Governance framework in relation to the speciality of special care dentistry including clinical audit, clinic and clinician review schemes, appraisal and continuing professional development, education and training.

To further develop and provide SCD assessment and treatment services.

To identify the needs of particular patient groups and work with hospital consultant and other Trust colleagues and key stakeholders to support the development of integrated special care dental service care pathways for adult patients with special needs

To liaise and develop close links with other health colleagues and colleagues working with other agencies in identifying / providing care for patients who require special care for dental treatment.

To provide professional support and development for dentists in the Directorate who have or who wish to develop a special interest in special care dentistry. This includes identification of training needs and organisation of training for dentists and other team members as appropriate.

To ensure that appropriate links and onward referral systems are established with local Consultants in special care dentistry.

To set up appropriate clinical governance systems for SCD within the Directorate and ensure that this is linked to the local Consultants in special care dentistry.

To provide high quality preventive and treatment oral care services for people who are unable to accept routine dental care because of some physical, intellectual, medical, emotional, sensory, mental or social impairment, or a combination of these factors according to the criteria and protocols relevant to the specialty of Special Care dentistry.

To deliver dental treatment under local anaesthesia, conscious sedation (including advanced sedation) and general anaesthesia.

To provide specialist oral health care for patients in a variety of settings, including clinics, hospitals and on occasions on a domiciliary basis, being adaptable to the different situations and working environments.

To support any necessary further developments in special care sedation and behavioural management within DCDH including sedation and general anaesthesia for patients who cannot accept treatment any other way.

To support other clinicians within the Directorate in providing special care dentistry, including accepting referrals, assisting in treatment planning and provision of dental care.

To keep comprehensive records and complete statistical returns to monitor the services provided as required by DCDH and in accordance with the competencies identified for a specialist in special care dentistry.

To maintain professional knowledge, skills and awareness of current developments and CPD requirements within dentistry ensuring the professional skills and knowledge of the post holder and ability to provide dental care equate with accepted and generally agreed standards relevant to the specialty of special care dentistry.

To undertake clinical and non clinical duties, demonstrating the competencies identified for a specialist in special care dentistry as determined by the Royal Colleges and accepted by the General Dental Council. The post holder will be required to maintain the competencies of a Band C (clinical) dentist as defined in the Salaried Primary Dental Care Services (England) Terms and Conditions of Service (NHS Employers January 2008).

To maintain and demonstrate compliance with the GDC Standards for the Dental Team.

To participate in Job Planning and gather evidence to demonstrate competencies set for the post.

To maintain and demonstrate compliance with the Trust's requirements for mandatory training.

To be aware of and apply relevant Trust and Directorate policies and procedures within the scope of delegated responsibility.

Support undergraduate, specialist and DCP training programmes within primary care as required.

Involvement with research projects as appropriate.

To be responsible for the supervision of the salaried dental staff who are working under the direction of the post holder.

To ensure confidentiality requirements are respected in all matters relating to patient, DCDH, and Trust issues.
