Job summary
We are a UKAS and IBMS accredited department serving a major university teaching hospital with many clinical specialties. The laboratories utilise state-of-the-art equipment. We provide a comprehensive range of Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratory services and specialty diagnostic testing and reference work for leukaemia, haemostasis, thrombosis and haemoglobinopathies.
We are looking for a suitably motivated and enthusiastic individual ideally with Haematology laboratory experience. You will have active knowledge of laboratory working, including health and safety awareness and a basic practical and theoretical knowledge of both the routine and specialist methods employed.
You will be required to work at all Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust sites, dependent on the needs of the service. The department is looking for an individual to work across our Oxford Road Campus and Wythenshawe Hospital. You will be required to be flexible in working your contracted hours and adjust when necessary to meet the service needs of the department.
Main duties of the job
The Post holder will act as an Associate Practitioner assisting HCPC registered staff within the Laboratory Haematology Clinical Service.
The post holder will be based inthe Laboratory Haematology Clinical Service and work under both direct and indirect supervision in the department.
They will assist theBiomedical Scientist (BMS) by preparing and sorting patient samples, loading samples onto analysers, performing routine instrument maintenance, supervising medical laboratory assistants and trainee associate practitioners, performing a number of specialised and non-routine tests and procedures to a high degree of accuracy and precision using manual pipetting with a variety of specialised sample preparation techniques under the supervision of an HCPC registered BMS, assisting in stock control and adherence to External Quality Assurance schemes.
The post holder will, as required, be proficient in the use of automated devices, oversee their operation by Medical Laboratory Assistants, ensuring that Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) are followed and reviewed were required; Quality Control and Quality Assurance checks are performed, and will also be required to train and assess users as appropriate.
The above indicates the main duties of the post which may be reviewed in the light of experience and developments within the service. Any review will be undertaken in conjunction with the post-holder.
