Job summary

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) was formed in 2017 following the merger of Central Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust. With the inclusion of North Manchester General Hospital from 1st April 2021, our organisation provides a single hospital service across the City of Manchester.

THE POST

We are seeking to appoint a committed Consultant Histopathologist to join our experienced and highly motivated team at the Oxford Road Campus (ORC), although there may be a requirement to work across our other sites. It is intended that this post will join the Gynae reporting team. The post holder will be required to report diagnostic cytology.

The subspecialist MFT Gynaecological pathology team supports clinical services provided by St Mary's Hospital, which represents one of the UK's largest integrated and multidisciplinary gynaecology services. Services provided include gynaecological oncology, uro-gynaecology, reproductive medicine, benign gynaecology, maternity and obstetrics, vulval surgery and colposcopy (including the NHS cervical screening programme). St Mary's Hospital is a regional referral centre, providing highly specialised secondary and tertiary care to patients in the Greater Manchester region and beyond. The Gynae path team at ORC receive approximately 10,000 cases per year for reporting.

Main duties of the job

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

You will join a team of 22 other full and part time Consultants in the Adult Histopathology Department at ORC who provide a reporting service for Head and Neck.

As a member of subspecialist MFT Gynaecological pathology team, the appointee will

Report a wide range of gynaecological cases, including complex gynae oncology cases (vulval, cervical, endometrial, tubo-ovarian and gynae sarcoma cases), small biopsies, cervical cases (including screening programme biopsies and loop excisions) and benign gynaecology cases

Offer a specialist review service of external cases for patients referred to St Mary's for treatment and/or MDT discussion

Attend, review and present cases at the weekly St Mary's gynae-oncology MDT

Attend, review and present cases at other gynae MDTs, including the vulval CPC meeting, benign gynaecology MDT and colposcopy MDT (discussing cervical screening programme patients)

Contribute to the gynae cut up rota (including dissection of complex cancer resections)

Report frozen sections / provide intra-operative consultation service to the gynae-oncology team (predominantly ovarian tumours)

Work collaboratively as part of a subspecialist team, with a focus on high quality, peer review and patient safety

Be engaged in audit and service improvement projects, and participate in the National Gynaecological Pathology EQA

Take an active role in teaching and training of resident doctors attached the Gynae path team

  • MB ChB or BDS or equivalent
  • Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or General Dental Council (GDC) (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview)
