This is an evolving role developed by NHS England to strengthen patient safety across healthcare in the UK. Patient safety partners can be patients, carers, family members, or members of the public - including NHS staff from other organisations. We welcome people from all backgrounds, cultures, and communities, including those living with different conditions, to ensure a wide range of voices are heard.
As a Patient Safety Partner, you'll work alongside our staff, volunteers, patients, and families to help shape safer, kinder, and more person-centred care. Your voice matters and by sharing your experiences and perspectives, you'll play a vital role in making changes that truly enhance patient safety across our hospitals. This is a unique opportunity to influence how care is delivered, ensuring it reflects the needs, wants, and preferences of the people we serve.
Main duties of the job
The role descriptor provides a summary of the role and main duties of a Patient Safety Partner at MFT.
Involving patients and the public in helping us to shape, understand and improve patient safety is a crucial part of MFT being able to deliver high-quality, safe care with excellent outcomes and experiences and the Patient Safety Partner (PSP) plays a key role in this.
This includes:
- Contributing to governance structures such as safety and quality committees
- Supporting oversight of compliance, learning from incidents, and strategic improvements
- Reviewing and advising on policies and strategies that impact patient safety
- Promoting the patient, carer, and service user voice in decision-making
- Involvement in patient safety investigations and improvement projects
- Participating in training and development sessions relating to safety
The expectation of this role is two days (approx 15 hours) per month paid at a rate of £150 per day.
