Paediatric Home Renal Therapies Team Leader

Job summary

The Nephrology Department at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital was established in 1967. It was the first paediatric nephrology service in the North of England, the first to offer a dedicated paediatric haemodialysis service in 1974 and our first kidney transplant took place in 1982. The department provides a comprehensive clinical and research service for children and young people with kidney disorders from a catchment population of 3.5 million across the North West of England.

This role is an exciting opportunity to join the wider Nephrology specialist nursing team as a Paediatric Home Renal Therapies Team Leader / Clinical Nurse Specialist.

The post holder will work primarily with children and young people with Stage 5 chronic kidney disease who require renal replacement therapies, line managing a team of specialist nurses and providing direct patient care and patient/family education to support them receiving these therapies at home.

Main duties of the job

To promote home haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis as appropriate with families and with other professionals caring for children with renal failure and act as a resource for specialist clinical advice both within and external to the Trust.

To initiate and coordinate assessment of patients' social and living arrangements for suitability for home haemodialysis/peritoneal dialysis.

Train suitable families to be able to independently provide safe and effective haemodialysis treatment within their own homes

To provide illness management advice to families at home, to ensure well-being and safety during times of illness and during travel abroad

Review results and in consultation with medical colleagues make changes in medication and dialysis regimens

Always ensure the psychosocial care of children and adults supporting choice of treatment options and adaptation to home haemodialysis within each family

To provide information, clinical advice and support to children on home haemodialysis and their families and to act as a resource to other professionals involved in that child's care.

Continue to develop the Home Therapies service contributing to development of new treatment protocols in partnership with multidisciplinary colleagues.

Support other centres offering paediatric renal care both nationally and internationally, particularly in regard to home haemodialysis.
