Job summary

An exciting opportunity exists for a Consultant Clinical Geneticist with a Special Interest in Cancer Genetics to join the Genomic Medicine Service in Manchester. This is a replacement post. The 10PA/week appointment will be based within Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine, St Mary's Hospital, Manchester. The post will involve delivery of General Cancer Genetics services and a special interest complementary to those of the existing service would be welcome. A request to work part-time will be considered.

Main duties of the job

This post offers the opportunity to work in a functionally autonomous department within a major teaching and research institute, adjacent to one of the largest University Campus's in Western Europe and in collaboration with the largest Undergraduate Medical School in the United Kingdom. This appointment is to replace a full time consultant in Cancer Genetics. We use a workload guideline of 50 clinic patients per PA job plan annually.The postholder will contribute to the delivery of Cancer Genetic services based at St Mary's Hospital. This will include both out patient clinics and attendance at MDTs including VHL, hereditary polyposes, Lynch syndrome, paediatric oncology, hereditary gastric cancer, inherited cancer MDT and GTABs. The successful candidate will be expected to take part in the triaging and supervising/consultation of urgent and prioritised cases. There is no out of hours commitment with this post.

Cancer genetics referrals comprise 40% of referrals to the Regional Genetics Service. There are 2.8 WTE cancer geneticists leading the service along with a consultant genetic counsellor. The cancer genetics service in Manchester has an international reputation both for clinical services and research particularly in the area of breast, ovarian and bowel cancer genetics. The clinicians founded and now run the national course for cancer genetics for trainees in medical genetics and genetic counsellors on a 4 yearly basis.

All genetic counsellors undertake independent clinics in cancer genetics. The consultant cancer geneticists supervise the counsellor workload.

MCGM offers a fast track service for urgent cancer genetics cases which is overseen by the consultants. The consultants are expected to see ad hoc urgent cases when necessary. The cancer genetic referrals are triaged by the consultants in cancer genetics.

The cancer team hold an MDT once a month attended by the consultant geneticists, consultant genetic counsellor and clinical scientists to discuss individual cases and strategic developments. A cancer team meeting with all the counsellors to offer clinical supervision is held once a month.

A cancer genomics MDT is held once a month to discuss any queries/cases arising from mainstreaming genetic testing. This MDT may be attended by non-genetics health care professionals as well as the core cancer genetics team.
