Job summary

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated radiographers to join our team working in both the CT and General X-ray areas of the Radiology department. This is a fantastic opportunity for radiographers wishing to develop their career in CT whilst maintaining their skills in the General X-ray areas of the departmentThis post is based on the Oxford Road site at one of the largest teaching hospitals in Greater Manchester. The work in the department is incredibly varied, and although at times challenging, it is also rewarding. We are a Major Trauma Centre and are the specialist centre for all penetrating and blunt abdominal trauma within Greater Manchester.The role will involve rotating between the CT and General X-ray areas of the department. You will be required to act on your own initiative, using a wide range of professional skills, whilst performing routine and complex procedures, sometimes without direct supervision.The post is divided between working in the General X-ray areas of the department and CT, which includes providing cover for a 24 hr service.

Our cross sectional imaging department currently has 2 CT Scanners, with plans to install a scanner dedicated to interventional CT. A further CT scanner will be installed as part of a redeveloped emergency department.The general department has DR in all our x-ray rooms. We provide support for our busy Emergency department, as well as inpatient, outpatient, and theatre work.

Main duties of the job

  • Take part in a rotation through both CT and General X-ray areas of the department, providing cover for a 24 hour service
  • Take responsibility for the welfare and comfort of the patient whilst in our care
  • Ensure all requests can be justified prior to exposure to ionising radiation - as required by the IR(ME)R
  • Ensure all patients are positively identified prior to examination
  • Make decisions on the most appropriate examination required, taking into consideration the medical condition and needs of the patient and any contraindications
  • Physically position the full range of patient presentations with accuracy
  • Review images and make a clinical assessment as to whether additional imaging is required to aid diagnosis
  • Ensure that urgent findings are communicated appropriately
  • Working without supervision, participate in the out of hour's duty rosters to maintain a 24 hour emergency service to the central site
  • Undertake the in-house training programme in IV injections of contrast media and work under departmental protocol
  • Take part in the general rotation through all areas of the Main X-ray Department
  • Participate in the teaching and assessment of all student Radiographers during their CT and general clinical placements.
  • Liaise with referring departments, keeping them informed of any delays to patient throughput
  • Perform any other radiographic or allied duties as required by the Senior or Lead Radiographer consistent with maintaining the efficient running of the department
