Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a senior specialist speech and language therapist to join the recently established Intensive Support Team on fixed term temporary basis to cover maternity leave. The post holder will form an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team consisting of clinical psychology, learning disability nursing, occupational therapy, and support workers. The Intensive Support Team work with a small number of Autistic young people and young people who have severe learning disabilities and their families where complex needs requiring intensive support have been identified. Working alongside respite services and other agencies, the Intensive Support Team work collaboratively to create, instigate, and support person centred plans and approaches with the aim of improving the quality of life and reducing any restrictions or restraints (in accordance with NICE guidance).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have extensive experience working with this client group and have developed skills in highly specialist assessment, formulation, intervention, and evaluation. They will be the only speech therapist in this service and will therefore be responsible for promoting a particular professional viewpoint within the team. The post holder will also have experience of supervision, training and consultation. The post holder will have the skills and experience to manage their own complex cases and experience of working in multi-agency settings.

Due to the level of independent working and management of high levels of risk, the post holder is expected to have considerable experience of working with this client group.

  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Considerable experience of working with children with severe and complex disabilities; including Autism; and their families in complex multi agency settings
  • Experience of designing and developing communication interventions for this client group
  • Experience of multidisciplinary and multi agency teamwork
  • Experience of consulting with health care and other professionals
  • Considerable experience managing risk in children with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour
  • Knowledge and experience of working within a Safeguarding Children framework
  • Experience of liaison and consultation in relation to a wide range of other relevant agencies
