Job summary

This is a full-time Consultant Clinical Scientist post in Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I). The post-holder will work closely with the Laboratory Director and Deputy Director to provide leadership of the transplant programmes which cover solid organ (cardiothoracic organs, kidney and pancreas, islets) and stem cell programmes in the North West region. In addition HLA typing for disease diagnosis and management. The North West Organ Donation Services Team provide services to a population of 7.6 million and this is one of the largest H&I laboratories in the UK. The post-holder will lead in specialist areas according to expertise and will provide cross-cover for the Laboratory Director / Deputy Director as required. Training is a high priority in this laboratory and a drive to support training and continuing education at all levels is essential. The post-holder will participate in a rota to provide out of hours Consultant advice and will attend multidisciplinary team meetings as required.

The post-holder must hold FRCPath in H&I or be within six months of attainment, and HCPC registration is mandatory. Evidence of recent peer-reviewed publications and post-graduate student supervision is desirable. This post will offer an opportunity for long term development of H&I research working closely with clinical colleagues and will allow the post-holder to establish an area of expertise to lead the department to excellence.

Main duties of the job

  1. Work closely with other Consultant Clinical Scientists to provide leadership of the laboratory team.
  2. Be responsible for the authorisation of reports and correspondence relating to patient care.
  3. Ensure effective service delivery and development in line with national and international standards.
  4. Direct, train and supervise all grades of laboratory and administrative staff.
  5. Resource clinicians with sufficient information on and interpretation of test results to enable effective patient care. Provide information and advice to patients regarding their transplant options.
  6. Interpret Department of Health policies and strategies, relevant legislation and current publications to set the strategic direction of services.
  7. Participate in multi-disciplinary and other pathology meetings.
  8. Participate in risk management through error reporting and subsequent investigation through audit procedures.
  9. Maintain an awareness of clinical service needs and the current medical and scientific literature which could influence the requirement for further development of the existing H&I services. Establish new techniques or services as required.
  10. With reference to the Laboratory Director/Deputy Director, contribute to the management and strategic planning of the laboratory and associated clinical services including the preparation of business cases and capital bids.
  11. Conceive and initiate research and development projects relevant to H&I. Supervise training and research projects within the laboratory
