Job summary

The Directorate of Respiratory Medicine, WTWA, the Manchester NIHR Clinical Research Facility (CRF) at Wythenshawe hospital, and the Medicines Evaluation Unit (MEU; based on site at Wythenshawe Hospital) have developed an exciting new consultant post that will work across these areas, with 50% of time spent in clinical trials (divided equally between the CRF and MEU) and 50% in clinical work within the Directorate.

Main duties of the job

The Manchester NIHR CRF is a dedicated clinical trials unit that has recently been re-awarded by NIHR through to 2027. The CRF carries out phase 1-2 research studies across all specialties but is especially strong in Respiratory Medicine, having evolved from a facility solely originally dedicated to Respiratory and Allergy research. The CRF offers the 8 bed Charles Blackley Ward as well as the separate 6-space CRF Clinic. We have a dedicated lung physiology suite for research, offering a full range of respiratory evaluations, and support the BHF Cardio-Respiratory MRI Scanner. The aim of this post is to increase our capacity to deliver Phase 2 clinical trials in COPD and asthma, and to develop the next generation of trials expertise. The expectation for this new role is that it will allow the holder to deliver a portfolio of commercial and academic trials alongside clinical medicine, ensuring that trials are integrated into clinical practice.

The Medicines Evaluation Unit (MEU) is an MHRA-accredited early phase clinical trials facility on the Wythenshawe Hospital campus (though not part of the NHS) which conducts studies from Phase 1 onwards. The MEU carries out predominantly phase 1 studies, including healthy volunteer and first in human trials, and has a strong respiratory portfolio. Working with the MEU will provide unique exposure to a range of experience not possible in the NHS, and will allow the postholder to develop experience in healthy volunteer trials too.
