Job summary
This is a fellowship suitable for a senior orthopaedic trainee with interest in pursuing a career in Hip , Pelvis and acetabulum surgery. The job offers a comprehensive tertiary MTC experience:
- High volume pelvic and acetabular trauma inuries often associated with high-energey polytrauma
- Weekly trustwide Pelvic MDT including T&O surgeons and members from the major trauma team
- Acute pelvic fracture clinic with majority of P&A patients seen jointly with consultant physiotherapist.
- One month poly trauma MDT clinic with head injury specialist, orthoplastic, general surgeons and rehabilitation team
- Hip and lower limb trauma surgery: Comprehensive exposure to femur, tibia, poly trauma, open fractures, periprosthetic femur fractures, periprosthetic acetabular fractures requiring fixation or replacement.
- Hip primary revision surgery at Trafford hospital
- Hip revision surgery jointly with hip arthroplasty surgeons (Mr Shah and Mr Mobeen).
- Acetabular acute and delayed reconstruction surgery
- Polytrauma experience and working closely with vascular, general surgeons, urology and emergency medicine teams
- Research activities including multiple NNIHR trials and other sponsored portfolio studies with T&O and the MTC team.
Main duties of the job
To provide a clinical service in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery, working closely with the consultants, junior colleagues, clinical assistants, and the wider multi-disciplinary team. The post holder will be accountable to the Lead Clinician.
Practical experience offered includes working in a highly supported environment with consultant-led ward rounds on daily basis in each firm, supervised elective and trauma lists, and elective and fracture clinics. Depending on the fellow's experience, they may be offered independent clinics and theatre lists.
Daily trauma meetings allow discussion of trauma admissions, with formal teaching, and provide an excellent opportunity for the specialty doctor to further his/her knowledge of the management of trauma patients. In addition, the fellow will be expected to participate in and help in the organization of the Pelvic Trauma MDT and the Manchester Acetabulum and Pelvic Surgery (MAPS) regional MDT. They will be expected to participate in the on-going audit. The post holder is expected to be involved in the ongoing research activities and will be supported to complete research projects during this post.
Middle Grade and junior doctors are regularly involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching with opportunities to teach the junior colleagues on a weekly timetable. The department also supports FRCS exam preparation and CESR application along with its required experience for the fellows.
