Job summary

The National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) funds Biomedical Research Centres (BRCs) as experimental medicine centres of excellence via competitive application every five years. Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) has recently been renewed over five years to provide experimental medicine infrastructure funding across Greater Manchester, Lancashire and South Cumbria.

Contracted by the NIHR, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) host the BRC in partnership with the University of Manchester and also with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

This post is for a Clinical Research Fellow (Asthma) for the Respiratory theme which sits within the inflammation cluster of the Manchester BRC. The purpose of the role is to support and develop the portfolio of respiratory related clinical research projects within NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre Respiratory theme.

The Fellow will have focus on an asthma study and will also work on a range of respiratory studies, including exacerbations of respiratory conditions.

Main duties of the job

Although the postholder will work on a range of studies, the focus of this role is the RADicA (Rapid Access Diagnostics for Asthma) study. The Rapid Access Diagnostics for Asthma study investigates novel methods for the diagnosis of asthma and prediction of response to inhaled corticosteroids, in adults and children. We have established a rapid access asthma diagnostic centre at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, in which we have available an array of established and novel tests incorporating extensive lung physiology and inflammometry, which enables us to characterise people with symptoms suggestive of asthma.

The post is available from 1 February - 31 October 2024 as maternity leave cover.

The Clinical Research Fellow is required to be able to work at ST3-5 level, and to have experience of respiratory medicine and respiratory research. They will be expected to manage and lead on REC submission, data analyses and publication.

The post is not approved for credit towards training but will allow the successful candidate to gain extensive clinical research experience.
