Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity for two enthusiastic individuals with clinical experience to join the pre-operative assessment team. The prospective post holder will be a registered paediatric nurse.
The main objective of the unit is to assess and optimise patients for elective surgery at RMCH, ensuring communication between the MDT. The prospective post holders will require a broad knowledge of surgery and the anaesthetic process and must have post-registration experience as a band 5 staff nurse.
The vacancy is a fixed term contract for 12 months. Precise working hours will be discussed at interview however the service runs 8:00-18:00 Monday-Friday.
Main duties of the job
The Paediatric Pre-Assessment Service plays a critical role in assessing the anesthesia-related risks for children who are scheduled for elective surgeries. Your responsibilities will involve conducting a thorough clinical evaluation of the child, including the assessment of vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, and BMI. Additionally, you may need to perform clinical procedures like a 12-lead ECG recording and venepuncture as necessary. Furthermore, you'll be tasked with gathering a comprehensive medical, surgical, and family history.
Before admission, you will ensure that all required test results and reviews are gathered and organised. Effective collaboration with a diverse team of healthcare professionals is essential, including anaesthetists, surgeons, play therapists, scheduling staff, and specialised teams. Strong communication skills are a must for effective teamwork. Additionally, the role requires the ability to make independent, evidence-based decisions, using national, Trust, and local standards as guiding principles.
Providing support to children and their families is a pivotal aspect of this role. You will be expected to communicate information clearly and succinctly, offering an overview of the anaesthetic procedure while highlighting any potential risks. Collaboration with the broader healthcare team will be necessary to address any concerns and implement reasonable accommodations as needed.
