There will be an opportunity in the future to apply for a substantive post as the urology service will be remodeling and expanding as a result of the merger of urology services across Manchester.

The department is looking for a consultant with core urological skills to help support and delivery the service. The unit provides a comprehensive general and specialized service which includes:

  • Cancer diagnostics
  • Robotic & laparoscopic surgery
  • Stones and endourology
  • Fixed site lithotripsy
  • BPH surgery
  • Female urology

Main duties of the job

Candidates should have the core skills to carry out the following activities independently:

Outpatient clinics

Flexible cystoscopy

Ward rounds & inpatient care

Day case surgery

General urology on call

This post is available with immediate effect. Within MFT, urology services are now spread across three inpatient sites - Manchester Royal Infirmary, Wythenshawe Hospital and North Manchester General Hospital. Urological activity is also undertaken at Withington Hospital, Trafford General Hospital and Altrincham Hospital. The successful candidate will predominantly be based at WTWA (Wythenshawe/Trafford/Withington/Altrincham) hospitals, but we are looking for someone who is flexible & prepared to work at other sites according to the changing needs of the service. At present, we have a cohort of 21 consultants delivering urological services across all sites.

The successful applicant will be expected initially to take part in a 1 in 8 rota which is fully supported by a middle grade urology doctor. The on call will be based at Wythenshawe Hospital although this model may change for all consultants as the urology services evolve. The hospitals currently operate a consultant of the week model where you will be looking after emergency admissions and elective/post-operative urology patients.
