Job summary
The Manchester Cytology Centre provides a regional cervical cytology service receiving over 450 thousand samples per year. The department also provides local diagnostic cytology and synovial fluid analysis services and is UKAS accredited.
We currently have opportunities for Cytology Screeners to join our busy team. You will work alongside other Cytology Screener and BMS team members in our refurbished screening room.
The successful Cytology Screener candidate will primary screen and rapid review cervical cytology slides, participate in training, sample preparation and some administrative duties.
To be shortlisted for the role you will hold an NHS Cervical Screening Programme recognised Certificate of Competence for cervical screening and have experience of Cervical Screening Programme procedures. Ideally you should be able to report Hologic LBC preparations and provide evidence of meeting national standards for screening workload and evidence of EQA participation. Update training would be given to NHSCSP Certificate of Competency holders who require LBC or Hologic ThinPrep conversion training. Consideration would be given to NHSCSP qualified candidates who may not have recent cervical cytology experience.
Main duties of the job
Main duties will include:
- To microscopically primary screen cervical cytology samples to assess the quality and report negative and inadequate samples, provide recommendation for recall following written and agreed protocols to NHSCSP standards.
- To primary screen, marking cells showing abnormality and refer these to senior staff after giving a primary diagnosis according to written and agreed protocols
- To ensure an efficient referral process is maintained for abnormal samples or samples a second opinion is sought in accordance to given turnaround time targets
- To rapid re-screen negative and inadequate samples as part of internal quality control
- To maintain sensitivity, specificity and annual screening workload figures as recommended by the NHSCSP.
