Job summary

The mortuary service at MFT has an exciting opportunity for two Anatomical Pathology Technician qualified to Level 3 and Level 4 Diploma . Candidates who do not hold the Level 3/4 Diploma will be appointed as Trainee Anatomical Pathology Technicians , Annex 21 arrangements will be used to reflect this and with a view to completing relevant qualifications after 12 months of in house training.

The mortuaries service at MFT includes the adult mortuaries at Manchester Royal Infirmary, Wythenshawe Hospital , Trafford General Hospital, North Manchester Hospital and also the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital Paediatric mortuary. This is one of the largest mortuary services in the country, performing approximately 1800 post mortems per year. The adult mortuary performs hospital and Coronial post mortem services and the RMCH mortuary provides a regional Coronial and Home Office post mortem service. The MFT mortuaries are fully HTA and UKAS accredited.

The post holder will undertake a broad range of mortuary duties including assisting with the day to day running of the mortuary, care of the deceased and post mortems whilst ensuring the provision of a high quality service across both the adult and paediatric services is maintained.

Main duties of the job

  • To assist in the post mortem room at both H M Coroner's & Hospital consented post mortems, including assisting in post mortems using specialized techniques
  • To assist with the release of deceased persons to funeral directors or other authorised persons in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • To assist with the receipt of deceased persons from the hospital and community in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • To assist in the transfer of bodies to other NHS establishments.
  • To assist medical staff, Coroners' Officers and other agencies with the viewing and identification of bodies.
  • To accompany bereaved relatives whilst visiting the deceased and in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Required to assist with high risk post mortems with appropriate protocols and Personal Protective Equipment.
  • To perform all aspects of practical mortuary work of varying complexity, this includes routine, specialist and high risk work. e.g. dissection, evisceration, reconstruction.
  • To liaise with the Trust Bereavement Team, Coroner's Offices and the Coroner's Liaison Officers for the needs of the service.
  • To liaise with other NHS departments as required i.e. Genetics and X-ray
  • To liaise with Home Office Pathologists and the Police.
  • To liaise with the Adult Histopathology team, the Paediatric Histopathology and Mortuary team and other Pathologists
