Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

MBT Study Lead Practitioner (FCAMHS)

The closing date is 03 May 2026

Job summary

Hampshire & IoW Healthcare are taking active part in an exciting and pioneering 2 year research project. It is a National Multisite Randomised Control Trial (RCT) run by Oxford Health, investigating the effect of Mentalization Based Treatment (MBT) for children and adolescents. Potential research subjects will have generated concern about violence and aggression and will have been referred to Community Forensic CAMHS. The opportunity is unprecedented and important. We are collaborating with University College London, the University of Hertfordshire and colleagues across England.

Ours is a cohort of children traditionally not offered talking therapy. The FCAMHS MBT trial will be a national first large-scale investigation to see if one form of talking therapy can help reduce risks of violence and aggression in individuals referred to the team.

Applications are invited for a Band 8a post devoted to the 2-year study as part of the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Regional Forensic CAMHS team. As well as being a member of the team providing core business such as consultations and training, you will be trained in MBT tailored to the needs of children supported by Forensic CAMHS, and supported to develop towards becoming an Accredited Mentalization Based Therapist. You will also co-ordinate the data collection and submission for the RCT.

Main duties of the job

As part of the local FCAMHS team, the post holder will contribute to managing the health and wellbeing of children and young people with forensic needs by providing expert clinical consultancy, supervision, formulation, training/education, assessment and intervention in collaboration with and in support of referring agencies.

Specifically, the post holder will facilitate the local FCAMHS involvement with a Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) of Mentalization Based Treatment (MBT) including:

-Supporting the recruitment of participants for the RCT

-Training in and delivering MBT to participants

-Monitoring own and colleagues' adherence to the RCT protocol

-Gathering and reporting data for the RCT

-Recruiting then supervising the RCT's Assistant Psychologist
