Job summary

We are seeking a motivated and detail focused Clinical Coder to join our Clinical Coding team, supporting the delivery of high quality, accurate clinical data within the Trust. Clinical Coding plays a vital role in patient care, service planning, research, and the Trust's financial sustainability, and this post offers an opportunity to contribute directly to these outcomes.

Working within a supportive and experienced team, you will be responsible for translating complex clinical information from patient records into nationally recognised clinical codes, in line with ICD10 and OPCS4 standards, and in accordance with national and local guidance. You will work closely with clinicians, auditors, and information teams to ensure coding accuracy, completeness, and timeliness, while maintaining the highest standards of confidentiality and data quality.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide high quality and timely coded clinical data, by following the national clinical coding rules and conventions. It is essential to ensure the data is accurate and complete to meet Trust deadlines, whilst supporting the allocation of Healthcare Resource Groups (HRGs), Service Line reporting, Clinical Governance and to facilitate maximisation of the Trust income in line with Payment by Results (PbR).
  • Adhere to the rules and conventions of ICD-10 and OPCS and take responsibility for updating your own references manuals and classifications when changes have been issued.
  • To input coded information into the organisations electronic patient record computer systems, paying particular attention to accuracy, timeliness and confidentiality.
  • To understand the impact of coded data on the business aspects of the Trust and be able to communicate the complexities of your work to Clinical colleagues.
  • To organise and prioritise own workload.
  • Liaise regularly with Divisional staff and other key stakeholders to ensure high quality coded clinical data.
  • To mentor and/or support junior clinical coding team members as appropriate.
  • Complete the clinical coding standards refresher course every three years in order to retain compliance.
  • Update your own skills and knowledge necessary, as required by the organization and lead clinical coder.
