Job summary
The Fellow in Medical Education (Psychiatry) is a 12 month fixed term role designed to develop advanced skills in undergraduate medical education, educational leadership, and academic scholarship. Based at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare Foundation Trust and working closely with the University of Portsmouth (a branch campus of KCL), the fellow contributes to the design, delivery, and evaluation of innovative psychiatry teaching across GEM2, GEM3, and the Core Psychiatry Course. The post offers hands on experience in curriculum development, assessment creation, educational research, and facilitation of small group learning, reflective practice, and clinical supervision. Fellows collaborate with senior educators, medical school faculty, and wider educational partners, gaining insight into governance and organisational structures in medical education. The role includes opportunities to develop digital learning resources, support outreach initiatives such as Psychiatry Summer Schools, and participate in examinations and admissions processes. Administrative support and funded professional development are provided, with optional progression toward postgraduate qualifications in medical education. Commitment levels range from 2 to 5 PAs weekly, allowing flexibility to combine clinical training with a structured educational fellowship.
Main duties of the job
*To support the Portsmouth Mental health leads: Dr Julie Waine and Dr Emma Nash.
*To work with the Medical Education Managers and the Undergraduate Business Manager.
*To develop, document and support structures for the delivery of educational programmes.
*To evaluate and improve educational programmes.
*To conduct and disseminate original educational research.
*To support and develop internal collaborations in education.
*To understand and support curriculum construction and development.
*To develop a range of educational materials: website content, interactive platforms, e-learning modules, written materials or handbooks.
*Producing high-standard materials for written examinations and OSCE stations.
*To take part in medical school examinations and admissions assessments
*To develop schemes and materials to inform school students about careers in psychiatry.
*To support/organize the Summer and Autumn Psychiatry Schools for school students.
*To participate and contribute to educational development activities for the Portsmouth faculty and for the Trust.
