Clinical Associate in Psychology (CAP)

Job summary

Come and work with us in Older Peoples Mental Health (OPMH). We are looking for an enthusiastic clinician who has experience working with complex cases preferably within the area of OPMH. This role helps increase access to psychological therapies for those individuals who struggle with complex trauma, severe mental health illness and personality issues as well as those with dementia and their carers and the ward Multi Professional Team. The role is based on the OPMH Inpatient ward of Primrose Ward at the Western Community Hospital in Southampton. The postholder will be supervised by a Clinical Psychologist and work closely with them.

The postholder will use a range of psychological models and protocols when addressing individualised patient need (for example, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Comprehend Cope and Connect) to inform treatment planning and appropriate choice of treatment protocols and understand how to interpret treatment choices with individuals, groups and other healthcare colleagues. They will use the Newcastle Model to assess people with dementia and their needs and plan appropriate treatment interventions.

The role offers opportunities for direct clinical interventions and multi-disciplinary team working, implementing evidence-based programmes of group and individual psychological therapies and providing consultation and supervision to other team members as appropriate to the role of a CAP.

Main duties of the job

To communicate constructively with a range of healthcare professionals including nurses, social workers, allied health professionals (AHPs) and medical colleagues as part of a multi-professional team in the OPMH inpatient service and communicate with the OPMH CMHTS as appropriate.

Link with the psychological services team, alongside any assistant psychologists and trainee clinical psychologists, while reporting to a Clinical Psychologist regarding psychological assessment, formulation and intervention.

Work as part of a multi-professional community team or in specialised clinical settings and liaise with relevant external agencies to facilitate and enable psychological interventions where appropriate.

Provide psychological therapy and intervention under the direct supervision of an Applied Psychologist or Clinical Psychologist.

Communicate to others the core concepts of psychological theory, research and practice in order to enhance their delivery of psychological interventions.

Provide training within teams to enhance delivery of clinical and research practice interventions appropriate to the health and psychological needs of patients across a range of service settings
